This equals the club record of 5 cup campaign goals held jointly by Jerry McCourt (1930/31), Ronnie Henderson (1948/49), Johnny Fearon and Joe Martin (both 1952/53) and Gary Haylock (2001/02).
Hope he makes the half dozen.

Gary Haylock Like David McMillan last night also scored 2 in the Cup semi final victory over Rovers in the 2001/02 campaign. And 2 in the cup final victory v Bohs.

I knew Johnny Fearon, a lovely man , but didnt know he scored this many goals in a season. Was he not a full back at one time?
Tomorrow is another day.

Two other statsy bits of interest from Tuesday's game. It was the first game Ronan Finn has ever scored in and lost! After 60 odd games. It's a bit of a meaningless stat, but it kind of hints at two things- When Finn plays well his team plays well, and conversely, he doesn't score when the chips are down.

And the win on Tuesday was only our second away win at Rovers in the FAI Cup in 12 attempts (the last was in 1935). Strangely enough Rovers' quarter-final replay win at Oriel in 2014 was their first and only away win over Dundalk in the FAI Cup (in 9 attempts).

Overall FAI Cup records v Rovers (brace yourself)
Home: pl: 9; W 3, D 5, L 1
Away: pl: 12; W 2, D 3, L 7
Neutral: pl: 14; W 3, D 4, L 7
Total : pl: 35; W 8, D 12, L 15
*These stats I've thrown together quickly so may not be 100% accurate

Play anywhere Johnny Fearon alternated between both full-back positions in his debut 1948-49 season and won a Cup medal that year playing right full. He won his second FAI winner’s medal in the 1951-52 season from the inside forward positions and scored a very healthy 13 goals from 25 starts—5 of them in the FAI Cup.
He spent 6 years with the club and while he only scored twice in his first three years, he managed 26 goals in his last three.

In terms of the first 2 stats you talk about Sean, would the game not be counted as a draw statistically meaning that Finn's goalscoring and our poor record away to Rovers in the cup continue as the match was technically drawn?

Speaking of stats, looking at my own cup final 'record'

2017 will be my 10th, in the previous 9 cup finals, I have seen Dundalk win 6 times*, with 3 defeats (87, 93 & 16)

So P9 W6 L3...........1 to go !

* I just about remember my first final (1977) - but it still counts, I was there !

Ha!! That's a good one. 93 was my first. 1-0 shels. A drab affair. Freezing cold. The mothers sandwiches were great though

Good stats Mike, my own read like this. 2017 will be only my 5th!! 1988, 93, 2002 and 2016. I was abroad for the 2015 final...so P4 W2 L2..!!!

And for the anorak angle, 3 different grounds, technically 4 really.

1977, 1979, 1981, 1987 & 1988 all in Dalymount

1993 in the old Lansdowne Rd

2002 in Tolka

2015, 2016 (and 2017) Aviva

Also just realised we wore our home strip in all of these finals, with the classic all white kit in 2002, what a strip that was.

Generally speaking the result after extra time counts as the match result. So Dundalk won at Rovers, and lost at Rosenborg (despite drawing 1-1). A win/loss on penalties is generally counted as a draw

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned O'Donnell's goal. An inch perfect free from nearly half way followed up by an intelligent and difficult header. Watched it time and time again. Sensational!

Notwithstanding the excellence of our finishing I thought the Rovers keeper was uncharacteristically poor and at fault for several of the goals.
