Dundalk V Finn Harps | Fri 23 June | KO 8pm | Oriel Park

Postby Ezeikial » Tue Jun 20, 2017 7:39 pm

Finn Harps are currently top of the 5-team relegation mini league

They are likely to provide a stiffer test than 10 man Drogheda, and I expect that it could be a physical encounter with the visitors happy to take a draw.

I hope Patrick McEleney will get some additional confidence from his wonder-goal last week and can turn it on again like in the opening month of the season.

This one is quickly followed by another home tie with Galway. 6 points too much to ask for?

All the focus must be on the trip to Norway.

No, all focus should be on the next game. We need to consolidate 2nd place to make sure we are back in Europe next season. That won't happen if we take our eye of the ball in the league. Worry about Europe in the week leading up to it.

I was thinking of the fans and the furore over lack of info from the club. It is understandable that people are thinking of the European game already as we all know that the usual comments on the next game being all that matters are spot on. But with the league title gone Europe, 2nd place (European spot) and the FAI Cup is probably whats on the minds rightly or wrongly among fans. Then the other two cups we are in the last 4 for.

Harps are never considered and banker but we should be taking 3 points and we should all be thinking 3 points minimum. I preseum O'Connor will not be available. Is McCourt still out injured? I dont want him to be pulling the strings against us but it was always a joy to watch him play when on song so lets put them to the sword and if McCourt happens to go on a mazey dribble for a consolation goal I wont lose any sleep over it. 4-1 and plenty of news/gossip on transfers and signings, European travel arrangements and even ground developments for us all ;)

Exactly - ridiculous to say we should be focusing all on the Rosenberg game at this stage with 4 games to play before that.

Any team news?

Manager Stephen Kenny will be once again without winger Steven Kinsella who continues his recovery from injury however he is the only absentee and Kenny has everyone else available to him.

With only one or two posts in this thread I was being flippant in that all the focus must be on the European game (from a fans or Orielweb perspective) not in general!!

Sluggish first half but very happy with the second 45, decent win, another clean sheet, some decent goals too.

We need to cement this second spot, another 3 points on Monday v Galway in the game in hand over both Bray and Rovers will help.

Delighted for McGrath with his goal, thought he is unlucky not to be starting.

I actually think a lot of the hard work was done in the first half. Movement was very good and we had a lot of possession moving the ball around the pitch forcing Harps to chase. This hard work was what allowed the gaps to open in the second half.

Good performance over all and good to get a bit of form coming into Europe. More of the same against Galway on Monday.

Thought there was some very good performances, especially from McMillan and O'Donnell.

Well maybe so, the one thing I did think at HT was we were at least wearing Harps out, and I didn't think they would stick with us in the second half. McMillan should have buried that chance on HT but he had a lot of work to do with his goal in the second half to be fair, great finish.

We moved the ball well and found space in central midfield areas to run at their defence. When we can do that in a game, we will score goals.

However, we have to bear in mind that Harps had Paddy McCourt in central midfield whose lack of movement and tracking back was constantly exploited by us.

It is a different matter when we play teams with a midfield packed with fast and strong players. In those games we tend to create little or nothing as we lack wide players who can penetrate down the wings.

There has been plenty of question marks over some of Kenny's signings this season but not signing McCourt was definitely the correct decision.

along with Killian Brennan last week, both great players in their day, but living on their names now. Both finished. the worrying thing for me is the amount of chances we create that we don't finish.. You will get plenty of chances against the likes of Drogheda and finn harps, but when we play Cork, Rovers and Rosenborg, we might only get 1 or 2 chances in a game and we need to be more clinical and finish them.
