Galway V Dundalk | Mon 7 Aug | 4pm | Eamonn Deacy Park | EA Sports Cup

Postby Ezeikial » Wed Aug 02, 2017 11:35 pm

Probably the more important of our two matches over the August bank holiday weekend

With it being a bank holiday Monday afternoon kick off (4pm) it makes it easy to get there and back on the same day.

The EA Sports Cup assumes significant importance for us with the league a lost cause- a place in the final is obviously up for grabs on Monday

I always thought the hard earned 3-2 win in the final of the 2014 EA Sports (always league cup to me) was a massive milestone. This was the first senior trophy we won in 12 years, and paved the way for the first league title in 19 years one month later.

A new generation of fans came for that win v Rovers in Sept 2014 and they have stayed.

Team News & some other stuff from website preview

How did we get to the semi-finals?

We qualified for the last four by defeating UCD back in April in an Easter Monday fixture. The game finished 1-1 after extra-time with Conor Clfiford cancelling out Gary O’Neill’s opener. The Lilywhites won 6-5 on penalties. In the quarter-finals, Dundalk defeated first division leaders Waterford 3-0 also at Oriel Park. Clifford again scored with Thomas Stewart and the now departed Ciaran Kilduff got on the scoresheet.

Referee

Ray Matthews will take charge of the game on Bank Holiday Monday with Alan Sherlock and Declan Toland with John McLoughlin as fourth official.

Anything else we should know?

The match kicks off at the earlier time of 4 p.m. and must be played to a finish. Extra-time and penalties if required should the teams finish level after 90 minutes.

Team news

Patrick McEleney made his return to the team after a groin injury on Friday and is available for selection once again. Thomas Stewart missed out on Friday with a back injury but may be in contention to play. Dane Massey however was ruled out with a calf strain and is likely to miss out once more.

Tallaght or Turners Cross then for the final as its been Oriel, Galway, and Limerick since last in Dublin.

I reckon it will be on Saturday 16th September, which means moving the Cork away game to midweek somewhere. It would be the week following the next round of the cup - if we beat Derry.

Playing the following Saturday would mean shifting the home tie against Drogheda.

Why should it be automatically assumed to be in Tallaght.

A coin toss is the fairest way to decide

I was just going on comments on Twitter where previous finals have been held in recent years. Plus we were home against rovers the last EA final. Perhaps a coin toss would be better

Very comfortable victory & right from the off Dundalk pressed up the park & were deserving to be 1 up. Good for Mc Grath to get back on the score sheet. Grimes, after a slow start got into the game & overall played very well. In fact although the back four weren't troubled to much, they set up well & repelled any counter Galway attack.

Good win & another final to look forward to. The venue, I'm lead to believe will be decided by a coin flick. Rovers been our opponents will add a little bit of spice to the occasion. Our victory over them in the final of this competition a few years ago was the catalyst to a great period of success for Dundalk FC. Same again please.

DFC | Kenny delighted with his side’s performance in Galway as Dundalk FC set up final date with Shamrock Rovers
