Bear in mind there is no such thing as "letting someone go" if they are out of contract, Towell, Horgan, Boyle and Finn are prime examples.

We should have done more to keep Finn. Waiting until the last possible second to re-sign players is a risky model and we lost out. It could happen again with Benson, Gannon and McEleney if we're not on the ball

1. How do you know when/What Finn was offered?
2. How do you know what offers/talks are on table for players this season?

I agree. I also recall a statement that there were no discussions about contract renewals as everyone was focussing on the Europa League. If we had made it out of the group, then everything changes. You also had the involvement of agents who were saying "wait, wait". You cant force a player to sign.

A big challenge on keeping Finn was trying to counter offer what Rovers had put to him, they were prepared for him to essentially work part time as a footballer and to go back to non football employment, they also offered a 3 year deal.

I've no idea what we offered him but I would imagine it consisted of continuing with 5 days (or evenings) training in Dlk and remaining as a full time footballer.

In football terms in my view he chose the wrong option, but financially if he was to look forward to support his family etc, he probably will see the Rovers model as one that offered him more security long term. From our point of view and personally speaking I was very disappointed at the time as he could easily have played 2 more seasons at a higher level and do what he is doing now later, but he made that decision.

I will say one thing though, not knocking his contribution or ability as he played a big part to two leagues and one cup win but I really thought we would have missed him more, I think we have adapted quite well to be honest without him.

Back to the future, we need to be tying down the better players to 2 year deals, 52 week contracts if we can support that, winning more trophies and finishing as strongly as we can will help, then we need to draw up a list of new targets, and get them onboard, preferably in 2017. If we can keep our best players and add in 3 more quality players, I have no doubts we will start 2018 as league favourites.

Last year the club had to wait until December to start the formal process of tying people down. That's a fact of life given the staffing levels at the club and the work that had to go into managing the EL group stage and so on. That doesn't mean conversations weren't being had, verbal assurances weren't being made and so on.

Finn himself had every intention of staying, and was talking in terms of other signings for Dundalk a week after the last EL game. But his head turned by the sort of offer LOI clubs just don't make. Such is life. I agree that we no longer miss him, but we did in Series 1 when all the damage was done.

The planning for next season in terms of tying players down was started during the transfer window. Most players will remain non-committal until the end of the season. I would. Also if some players are engaging agents now, then the instability is only going to increase as these guys play clubs off against each other. Not a lot we can do about that either unless we want to get ridden.

If we lose one or two to England then so be it. I'd be disappointed if we lost anyone we considered first choice to another Irish club, however.
There's only one word for that - magic darts...

Just listening to the guys from Longford Podcast "Between the stripes" a brief chat with Gary Rogers. Interesting to note he mentioned he is signed up for next year, apologies if this was posted previously.

Heres a link to the guys podcast:

Rogers is coaching Cavan GAA keepers so it would suit him to be still at Dundalk for that even if he ends up as back-up if a keeper is brought in.

Few people on social media saying that Karl Sheppard will be a Dundalk player next season. Not sure why he'd want to leave Cork maybe he wants to move closer to Dublin?

I know we've tried to sign him many times but I'd love to see Conor McCormack in a Dundalk midfield. He'd be the perfect long term replacement for SOD again I can't see this one happening. He seems settled at Cork and has turned us down before.

McCormack is similar to Shields and Clifford except he is even more prone to cards. Are you suggesting offloading Shields?

Just remember that rumour could be started by

- Dundalk
- Karl Sheppard
- His agent

Ronan Finn left us because he was fed up with the amount of travel both at home and abroad. Maybe Karl feels the same OR doesn't see Cork challenging next year. Kenny is the best there is in terms of extending/improving someone's career.

Would be great to see key players tied down before end of season if possible, perfect timing would be the week prior to the cup final, if we make it.

In no particular order. Gannon. McEleney. Benson. Vemmelund. McMillan.

Connolly. Duffy. O'Donnell. Rogers. McGrath & Hoare all on two year deals. Pretty sure Shields is also.

What about the rest like Gartland. Sava. Grimes. Massey. Mountney.

Anyone else we want to keep?

Depending who leaves, we will need at least 3 in. A top Striker should be one priority.

Outs - Sava, Barrett, Clifford, Ciaran O'Connor
Ins - Corbett (UCD GK), McEneff, Hoban

Poynton to come back into the squad also.

A lot obviously depends on the decisions of Vemmulund, Gannon, Benson, and Mountney. I believe the US is attracting Benson and Mountney.
I also think that SK will go all out to sign McEneff. No idea what his contractual situation is.
