I agree to an extent - It is hard to get a player in the July window who is match-ready without paying a fee. For out-of-contract players coming in from the UK, in most cases they have not played since late April or early May and so it is a big ask to get match fit quick enough to make an impact.

However if the right player comes available (in UK, Ireland or elsewhere) it can be a case of striking while the iron is hot, in the knowledge that it may be the following season before the club will see the best of them.

If SK concludes that neither Sam Byrne or Marco Tagbajumi can substitute for Patrick Hoban, he will take his chances on getting another striker in if he can manage it. If he is not happy with fitness progress and form from Chvedukas he could well try to add another midfielder to challenge Benson.

The "why bother bit" is reflected in the tightness of the league title race and the fact that depth and quality of the squad is likely to be a key factor in deciding where the title ends up

I think our first choice defense in Europe will be Gannon, Cleary, Hoare and whoever of Massesy of Jarvis does best in the interim

McGrath (2019) and Hoare (2020) sign new deals.

Brilliant news. McGrath only a one year extension. How old is he? 21?

Great news to see players signing extensions mid season, hopefully more to come. Just a wee bit disappointed both are not until 2020, it might suggest McGrath fancies a crack across the water ?

Just on the comment on the defensive line up for Europe, I'd go with Gannon-Hoare-Cleary-Massey. The latter gets the nod for his 20+ game experience with DFC at that level.

With the transfer window looming it would be good to get opinions on who if anyone we should sign. Back up to Hoban will probably feature large, but who? And who else? Doing the rounds last night was Bolger from Rovers, not sure which one, with O’Donnell out. I also heard Supple from Bohs from one of his mates. Kelly probably still on the cards from UCD. Is there anyone we would let go at this stage? In my view tying doing Krisztián Adorján for rest of the season would be smart, I also like Carr from Rovers but have not seen Kelly play.

We badly need back up for Hoban as we are very reliant on him now. Marco hasnt worked out in my opinion and would be best for all parties if he moves.

Someone nippy on the wings preferably both footed could be useful for cover for Duffy and Connolly. Preferable than playing players out of position

How long is Hoban signed for?? I’d be trying my hardest to tie him down to along term contract. Not sure if any English clubs would take a chance on him again this would be his third attempt at moving across the water with his last spell having numerous clubs and making little or no impact with any all for different reasons... But I’d be trying to tie him to a two year contract.. . No way we could be looking at Greg Bolger there is absolutely no football in that lad it has to be the young lad who can play but think he is tied down long term... Resigning of Mcelnney would be very good but only way that could happen is if Oldham cancel his contract, they obviously have no faith in him anyway with them heading for league two and needing two win they made their three subs and Patrick wasn’t one of them so maybe that could happen...

Mutual termination of contract is only one possibility. A loan deal is another.

It seems that the player is eager to return. A new manager at Oldham may change the picture again.

Oldham are in meltdown.

"Wages have not been paid on time for the last six months. On one occasion, a player claimed he could not turn up for training because he had no money to put petrol in his car. A member of office staff is understood to have taken out a credit card before Christmas to enable them to buy presents. Some members of staff have still not picked up their salaries from April.

On Thursday, the latest payday, a handful of office staff and no players or playing staff received their wages. On Monday that remained the case. A number of agents have told Sportsmail they will no longer allow their players to sign for Oldham because there is no confidence that they will be paid. "

If both signed what would our first 11 be? Where would that leave McGrath and adorjan? Nice problem to have

McEleney has talent no question but where would he fit in to the current team? Would seriously strengthen the squad no question

If McEleney comes back, he could be tied down on a long term deal. It is that continuity that is needed to meet the ambitions of the owners to win consistently.

As we saw with Vemellund last season, there is no stability with players coming from abroad. Not on the money paid in the LOI.

Adorjan is playing great at the moment, but how long will he want to stay for?
