There’s the Champions path and the league path. Since neither Ajax nor Sturm Graz are champions of their own domestic league, they’re in the league path, as are Dundalk and Larnaca. Celtic, Cork and Rosenborg are in the Champions path as they’re the champions of their respective leagues.

I love your optimism

So, Sturm Graz await the winners. Just looking at the rankings this draw may actually have worked out very well for AEK/Dundalk.

*Coefficient anorak alert*

When Euro draws are done before the previous round is completed it is normally assumed that the higher ranked team will win, for the purpose of seeding. So Ajax/Sturm were seeded in the third qualifying round of the Champions League thanks to Ajax's high coefficient score of 53.5 (Sturm are at 6.57, just a little ahead of Dundalk on 5.5). However it looks like they losers of the Ajax/Sturm tie also carried the higher coefficient into the Europa League draw. I guess it would be unfair to saddle Ajax with Sturm's low coefficient if they had dropped into the EL. But this means that the losers of Ajax/Sturm effectively had a coefficient of 53.5 in the EL draw, meaning Sturm were seeded, when they certainly wouldn't have been using their own coefficient. It goes to show the random nature of the draws.

Spare a thought for fk Sarajevo who got thrashed 8-0 at HOME to Atalanta after a 2-2 draw in Italy. Some poor sides still left from Luxembourg (two teams) Lithuania and Wales. Have to take a deep breath after tonights disappointment

That's the frustration. As a seeded team we could have drawn a team we'd expect to beat but got absolutely screwed with the draws this year

Larnaca have assemble a side probably good enough for regular group stage football, but it will take a few years for the coefficient to accumulate.

To be fair, we did it to Bate Borisov in 2016. We played well above our coefficient/seeding. You can be a "15 point" side and only have 3 or 4.

If we had got past Larnaca, we would have played Sturm Graz. If we had won that round, we *then* would have had to beat the winner of Feyenoord and Trencin of Slovakia just to reach the group stage. That's bonkers. That's punching above our weight for three two-legged ties in a row to even get to the party. They're letting far too many teams into the Europa League - 213 ffs!

You were the seeded team in the last round though. It shouldn't have been punching above your weight, but ye got unlucky in the draw alright.

You're right though, it's almost impossible for an LOI team to get to the group stages via the EL now. It's made winning the league all the more important. For you, as a seeded team in the CL first round when ye get there, there's a very good chance with a half decent draw of making it. Win round 1 as the seeded team. Even if you lose round 2 you'd drop into EL round 3 as a seeded team. Win that and you're in the playoff round. Luck of the draw there but very doable depending on team.

and away from home.

Linesman clobbered on the head with a bottle and split open. That should see Graz turfed out (hopefully).

I was wondering what the "int" stood for on live score. Interrupted obviously. Have you got a stream for the game? Much of a step up for Larnaca?
