Dundalk V Waterford | Fri 16 Mar | 7:45pm | Oriel Park

Postby Ezeikial » Tue Mar 13, 2018 11:39 am

Waterford will be coming to Oriel Park on Friday as joint league leaders with Cork on 12 points from 5 games.

A closer look at their results does not necessarily point to them being league contenders. Although the 4 wins from 5 games are impressive they have 3 home wins over Derry, St Pats and Bohs, with an away win over Sligo that was described as lucky by their manager. Cork run out 2-0 winners in their other away match.

Dundalk will be red hot favourites at the bookies, but there is clearly work to be done after the lack lustre performance against St Pats.

I expect a shake up in midfield with either O'Donnell or Chvedukas starting and McGrath returning in place of Connolly

I would say that we need to be more creative first. 2 chances in 90 minutes is not really enough.

With Hoban we see some of what happened when Kilduff was the lone front man - a tendency to lump it at him. Hoban is better to be clear, I'm talking about the affect on the others.

Midfield remains the key - receiving the ball from the defenders and either playing through the middle or giving good early ball to the wide players - and it seems so far that Kenny is relying on Benson to be that player..

If we can't find a replacement for Skip then hopefully he'll be in the side starting Friday.

He could do with following his own advice and drop non performing players and make subs sooner if players are having an off day.

From @Historyloi
Dundalk haven't conceded a goal after 5 league games played.

Most clean sheets at the start of a season:

7 Drogheda in 2006 *
6 Dundalk in 1981-82
6 Derry in 1991-92

* Includes expunged game with Dublin City
Stephen Kenny's Black & White Army

All 24 in the squad are available for selection. Some squeeze in the stand for the 6 who don't make the squad

Team news

As Kenny confirmed we have a fully fit squad to choose from for the first time this season as John Mountney has recovered from his medial knee injury he picked up in pre-season.

Did he not say that last week ? Yet SOD and Garts weren’t even on the bench!

Full squad, I guess that means Dylan Connolly gets 90 minutes again :)

Cant imagine Garts, Skip and a few others will be too happy sitting in the stands for too much longer. It will be interesting to see how SK manages the squad.

I think Brian Gartland, at 31, may not necessarily be first choice anymore. SOD badly missed in midfield. Simply for experience and composure.

The first choice centre back pairing currently appears to be Cleary and Hoare. If that is the case, SK is likely to only put one of Folan or Gartland on the bench, so it is well possible that the later could be sitting in the stand tomorrow night. It is up to him, or anyone else out of the team, to fight for their place and then when the chance comes to get back into the team to play so well that they can't be dropped.

Just because someone is not a first choice pick in any given week does not mean that they are out of the picture indefinitely, or don't have an important part to play.

The reactions and attitude of anyone who is not starting is crucial to the overall morale

PREVIEW: WATERFORD FC v DUNDALK – SSE AIRTRICITY LEAGUE
News, News Article
Waterford FC are bidding to make it four straight wins in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division on Friday night as Alan Reynolds’ men face Dundalk at Oriel Park with a 7.45pm kick off.

Monday night s[/u]aw the Blues maintain their 100% home record start to 2018 and an undefeated home record in the league that now stretches back to Roddy Collins’ final game in charge of the then ‘Waterford United’ back in September 2016. The upturn in fortunes of the club, now under the ownership of Lee Power and guidance of Alan Reynolds has been remarkable since then but Friday night’s test in Dundalk will be a marker for how far the club has come in the last year and a half.

The sides did meet last season when a much rotated Blues side on their way to the SSE Airtricity League First Division title bowed out of the EA Sports Cup at the Quarter Finals stage.

Speaking after Monday night’s 1-0 win over Bohemians, Alan Reynolds said:

“We came through Monday’s game with a number of injured bodies and players giving it their all for the shirt despite sickness in the camp so to come away with all three points was a super achievement.

“I have to give credit to Bohs, they were well organised and made it difficult for us. There were very few chances in the game but our defence performed extremely well. It is a part of our game we have worked on and so far it is paying dividends.”

The attention soon turned to Dundalk for Reynolds and his side after the full-time whistle on Monday. Reynolds added:

We spoke in the dressing room after the Bohs game that momentum now is in our favour. We have to go into every game looking to win and build on what we have achieved so far. It is a great group of lads and their drive to push this club onto the next level is second to none.

We have watched Dundalk now on a couple of occasions so we’ll set-up accordingly but we’ll have to be wary as well of managing our squad with the games coming thick and fast. There were a lot of tired bodies at full-time on Monday so recovery this week has been crucial to give everyone the opportunity to play again tomorrow night.

We hope to have Izzy Akinade back involved following his groin injury but we’ll assess that ahead of kick-off and with Bastien Hery as well who is 50/50 at this stage following his knock picked up v Sligo Rovers. Rory Feely was forced off on Monday night and is ruled out here as a result.

We are all looking forward to the challenge tomorrow night. We have prepared well and are ready to go.”

Team News:

Injured: Rory Feely

Doubtful: Bastien Hery, Izzy Akinade

Team is like to see at the min
Rodgers
Gannon
Cleary
Hoare
Massey
Mountney
Shields (even though he was shocking against pats )
Chvedukas
Duffy
Murray
Hoban

Jury still out on Duffy .. can be brilliant but don’t think he wants it enough... very yellow when it get though
McGrath can be brilliant too but won’t do the work that mountney will do

Not sure what type of game Waterford will come and play, but if we're going to have 60%+ possession then Shields is definitely not the guy we need in there. Skip and Chevdukas please, McGrath on the right.
