Dundalk V Portadown | Mon 19 Mar | 7:45pm | Oriel Pk | friendly

Postby Ezeikial » Fri Mar 16, 2018 3:20 pm

A couple of social media accounts are posting this friendly match as taking place in Oriel on Bank Holiday Monday in place of the postponed match in Derry.

I don't see any official confirmation, but then the website has not said anything about the Derry match being postponed and it is still listed as a fixture in the First Team Fixture list

Maybe I will get a team prediction correct for the first time................

-----------------------Sava-------------------
Poynton-----Gartland-----Folan----Jarvis
----------O'Donnell-------Mountney
Connolly---------Murray------------Byrne
-----------------Tagbajumi------------------

Dammit, maybe Treacy will start instead of Sava; Adorjan needs game time, is Mountney fit to start, will he play Murray at centre forward?

Jeez, I'm going back to bed

In particular I want to see Garts, Jarvis, O'Donnell, Adorjan, Tagbajumi, Connolly and Byrne all play 90 minutes.

In my opinion we're going along fine and only the Bray result could be considered a bad result. But we need to know that we have attacking options available if any of the current first choice are misfiring. Last thing we need is Murray being replaced by Connolly (for an obvious example) and thinking "well we'll never score now".
There's only one word for that - magic darts...

Apparently, Adorjan was unavailable on Friday night due to a dead leg inflicted by Chvedukas in training.

James Rogers knows the right questions to ask - there's five of the team lineup confirmed!

Stephen Kenny has confirmed that John Mountney will play his first game of 2018 against Portadkwn this evening. He also stressed that Stephen O'Donnell, Brian Gartland, Marco Tagbajumi and Sam Byrne would play and was hopeful Krisztián Adorján would too.

How is it possible that this team is struggling so much against Portadown's reserves and U20's...

Struggling??

Dundalk owned the ball but were let down by poor finishing.

Sam Byrne is a player, not 100% fit yet, but will nail down a place when he is. Adorjan was lovely on the ball but Marco struggled again. We need to keep Hoban fit.

I am not sure that we learned a whole lot tonight.

1. Skip got 90 minutes into his legs (he was blowing hard at the end)
2. Same Byrne is a footballer. The prospect of seeing him play when fit and at the right weight is exciting
3. Adorjan has a bucket of talent- jury out on his effectiveness
4. Marco is a mystery
5. Mountney looked lively for a fellow who was out for some time

Impressive Sam Byrne albeit against weak opposition but he certainly knows where the net is. Once fully fit he could be giving Pat Hoban a run for his money... This is what we want good competition for places throughout the squad. It was also good to see John Mountney back on the park, he too no doubt will be looking to get back to first team duties ASAP. I'd agree with said above our finishing, particularly in getting good & early balls in the box was noticeable but nonetheless a good run out for players looking to push for places on the first team.

Brian Gartland reflecting on the importance of getting game time:

Brian Gartland was delighted to be given a chance to impress against Portadown on Monday night at Oriel Park where the Lilywhites came from behind to run out 3-1 winner thanks to a Sam Byrne hat-trick.

Assessing the match, Gartland spoke to dundalkfc.com about the positives to take from a game against strong opposition.
