Comhghairdeas Micheál

Dundalk’s Michael Duffy named player of the month
Winger has helped Dundalk take top spot in the Premier Division

Dundalk’s Michael Duffy has been named as the Airtricity/Soccer Writers’ Association of Ireland player of the month for April with the 23-year-old outpolling Derry City’s Aaron McEneff and Dylan Watts of Bohemians to claim the award.

Duffy, who comes from Derry, was a key figure for Stephen Kenny’s side over the course of the month as they took 13 points from a possible 18 and Dundalk have since returned to the top of the Premier Division table, with the winger chipping in significantly on both the goal and assists fronts.

“I’m delighted to win it (the award),” he said. “It was a good month for me with three goals and three assists. I’m hoping I can just keep that up now and kick on again.

“At the start of the season I said I wanted to get into double figures. I’m at eight goals now so hopefully I’ll be well into that and I’d love to do well in Europe and do what the Dundalk teams over the last couple of years have done.”

“The league is tough this year,” he continued. “We’ve been top and then Cork and so on. Waterford and Derry City have been up there too. We’ve dropped a few stupid points and we’ve been a bit unlucky but we’re playing well overall.

“We’ve been tested with injuries too but it just shows the depth to our squad.”

Dundalk travel to Dublin on Friday to take on Bohemians with a two point advantage over second placed Cork City who are at home to Bray Wanderers.

What a signing Sean Hoare has been. Such a versatile player, I believe he could play in any position.
Congratulations, Sean, very well deserved!

As usual, James Rogers tweeting some interesting stats

James Rogers
‏@jamesdundalk

Sean Hoare’s Player of the Month award is the 20th time it has gone to a Dundalk player since Stephen Kenny took charge. He is the 11th different player from the club to have won the award in that time and only the second defender after Dane Massey in September 2014.

@jamesdundalk

Sean Hoare's Player of the Month award is the 41st won by a @DundalkFC player since the awards started in 1971. That puts the club on a par now with St Pat's with only Bohs (44) having more monthly winners

Great achievement for a defender to get it. (Massey won it primarily for scoring 2 in the League Cup final!) Top lad. If Burke is worth 300k..........

Its an incredible stat that in just the Kenny era the number of POTMs awarded to Dundalk players have doubled, and will likely top the 44 winners from Bohs this season when the treble is secured by seasons end!!

Robbie Benson and Pat Hoban nominated for the June Player of the Month award

The nominations for the SSE Airtricity/SWAI June Player of the Month have been confirmed.
Robbie Benson (Dundalk): As well as impressive displays in the middle of the park, Benson also chipped in with three goals.

Graham Burke (Shamrock Rovers): Now a Preston player, Burke scored for Ireland against the USA at the start of the month and also netted three times for the Hoops.

Dan Carr (Shamrock Rovers): Has proven to be a shrewd signing and showed why last month with the opening goal against Dundalk, a winner against Derry and a strike at home to Bray.

Graham Cummins (Cork City): Continues to lead the line for Cork to great effect and hit the net in wins over Waterford, Derry City and Sligo Rovers.

Pat Hoban (Dundalk): The Dundalk striker continued his fine form in front of goal this month with five to his name.

Kieran Sadlier (Cork City): The gifted attacker continues to deliver in the final third and struck a winner away to Sligo Rovers as well as strikes against Waterford and Derry City.

The winner will be announced next week.

While last Friday nights game was in June it would be a surprise if Hoban's MOTM award didnt swing the voting a bit, on top of a hatrick in Limerick and the great headed goal in Tallaght it'd be harsh if he didnt pick of the award. For all the thinking that Benson hasnt hit anywhere near top form his stats aren't to shabby either. Burke getting capped though is the only non Dundalk potential winner imo.

Pat Hoban seems to be the obvious choice, but these awards tend to be erratic and not necessarily merit based

Michael Duffy & Chris Shields in July nominations

The SSE Airtricity/SWAI Player of the Month nominations for the month of July have been announced.

Six players have been nominated for the award with both Dundalk and Shamrock Rovers receiving two nominations each. The nominations are as follows:-

Gavin Bazunu (Shamrock Rovers): The 16-year-old goalkeeper built on his excellent performances in June with a penalty save against Cork to keep another clean sheet. Also excelled for the Hoops in two Europa League games with AIK.

Michael Duffy (Dundalk): The Dundalk winger continued his exceptional form last month, both at home and in Europe, with four assists and a stunning volley against Levadia Tallinn.

Sean McLoughlin (Cork City): The centre back has risen to the challenge of becoming a first team regular and his confident displays last month show why he has become such a prominent figure in the champions’ defence.

Ally Roy (Derry City): The Candystripes won two of their three league games, with Roy scoring twice, including the winner against Limerick. In the Europa League, the forward also scored as Derry beat Dinamo Minsk away from home.

Chris Shields (Dundalk): Unbeaten in the league, Shields’ presence in the midfield has been immense and he was a key figure in the wins over Levadia Tallinn.

Dylan Watts (Shamrock Rovers): He struck the winner against Sligo, but it was the way he slotted seamlessly into the midfield and his composure in the centre of the park which helped the Hoops go unbeaten in the league.
