St Patricks Ath V Dundalk | Mon 9 Apr | 7:45pm | EA Sports Cup | Refixed Match

Postby Ezeikial » Sat Apr 07, 2018 12:16 pm

Another opportunity for players to stake a claim or to improve fitness levels.

With a number injured and Georgie Poynton on International Colleges duty (can he be withdrawn by Stephen Kenny) there may well be some additional opportunities for U19's

Ross Treacy is likely to make his club debut

Saw him warming up last night. He's quite small for a keeper, as is Sava.

Team news

The Lilywhites have a few injury concerns with Gary Rogers (calf), Sean Hoare (groin), Karolis Chvedukas (ankle) and Brian Gartland (tonsillitis) all sidelined however the match on Monday gives manager Stephen Kenny a chance to rotate his squad. Sean Hoare and Ronan Murray could both return while Sam Byrne, John Mountney, Marco Tagbajumi, Dean Jarvis and Stephen O’Donnell are all in line to feature from the start in Inchicore.

" Sean Hoare and Ronan Murray could both return" - when did we hear that before?

With a much bigger squad this year players are less likely to be risked when carrying knocks.
Looking forward to seeing how the squad players perform tomorrow. Can't imagine the St. Pats squad is particularly deep with quality so if they play a fringe side we should come through the tie.

The players that need game time and likely play will be formidable = as the above Byrne, Mountney, Tagbajumi, Jarvis, O'Donnell, Connolly; Gartland is bound to get a run out, Hoare and Murray will probably be be on the bench but will feature, Poynton should start and Tracey also. Folan might get some game time to build on the fitness and conidence and maybe even Adorjan could get a last 15 or 20 minutes as he gets to full fitness. Postponement of the original fixture has played in to our hands a bit witha decent game for eh 'fringe' players. Could even see some experiment with the formation.

When was the last time SK tinkered with formation? I wouldn't expect any change to it. With Chevdukas unavailable there is a bit of a selection headache in the middle. Could be a Skip, Murray, Sam Byrne trio flanked by Mountney on the right and Connolly on the left.
Shields, Benson, Duffy will surely be rested. McGrath might play in the middle.
I expect Sava to get the nod again. Couldnt tell you the last time SK used a third choice keeper, even in the LSC.

If we didn’t have so many key players out injured, I would not be expecting too many who started on Friday to play apart from Sava.

Jarvis and Poynton will prob take the full back slots, but without Gartland and Hoare, we might need to go again with the same two in the middle. In MF I think he’ll play O’Donnell and Adjoran (who needs games) with Mountney & Connolly on the wings, prob the latter having to go left.

If Murray is fit he might feature or else he will prob go with Byrne and Marco, who both also need games.

Tonight would have been a perfect match for Chevedukas and Hoare for example, and Gartland of course, pity all out injured.

There's a few assumptions here that Georgie Poynton will play tonight - although he was called-up for the Irish Colleges and Universities squad playing in Oriel at 4pm today

Dundalk FC’s Georgie Poynton has been included in the Irish Colleges and Universities squad to play the Scottish Universities in an international friendly at Oriel Park on Monday, 9th April. Kick-off at 16.00.

While it is an honour to respresent your country at any level, if Georgie has a choice he would probably prefer to play against St Pats and try to push for a regular place. I wonder if the club can withdraw him from the international? There is no mention one way or the other on the team news piece on the website

With doubts about the fitness of Sean Hoare and Brian Gartland, SK has the option of pairing Gavin Smith with Stephen Folan. Centre back is his natural position and although he is only 18 years old, he could do a decent job.

Other youths suchs as Adam Finnegan, Cian Flynn and Jack O'Keeffe have made pre-season appearances and may also feature tonight

Would be very surprised to see the youths involved. We have a massive squad and we are defending champions. Its against a fellow premier league team away from home. IMO all of those point to a strong line up.

You might be right, he may change his thinking and go with a few more established first team players, I can see one of Folan or Cleary starting, then again nothing too bad about a MF of O'Donnell / Adjoran / McGrath maybe, then Connolly / Mountney on the wings.

A chance to get to the last 8 is not to be sniffed at, and defending cup winners too as you say.

I doubt that he will start with any of the u-19s (although Gavin Smith is a good option at centre back) but I expect that some of the four mentioned will be involved in tonight's squad

Great opportunity to get some competitive game time for players but in the grander scheme of things the league cup doesn't matter. Can't imagine many of us will be overly disappointed should be get knocked out.
