Michael Duffy is on the verge of a Republic of Ireland breakthrough.

Martin O’Neill has told Mirror Sport that he wants to add the Dundalk winger to his ranks as soon as possible

The former Celtic man has been the best player in the League of Ireland this season.

Duffy won’t be in O’Neill’s squad named today for the upcoming Wales and Poland games.

Having represented Northern Ireland up to U21 level, the Derry man requires international clearance from FIFA.

But O’Neill said: “I’ve a lot of time for that young man and I’m going to do something about it. I’ve spoken to him and I’d like to take him on.”

That's interesting. Does it mean Duffy / O'Neill / the FAI are actively applying for international clearance?

No, he must board the magic international plane of club football recognition before he plays for Ireland (i.e he must play 4 minutes and 37 seconds for Burton Albion before he gets five minutes against Andorra) . Then he'll be on the clear

Michael Duffy has declared for the Republic but won't decide on his club future until the end of the season.

Don’t see him staying reading that, not without a major wedge of cash.
