Michael Duffy - Republic of Ireland

Postby Ezeikial » Mon Aug 27, 2018 11:56 am

While Michael Duffy won't be in todays Republic of Ireland squad for matches against Wales and Poland, according to Martin O'Neill his call-up is likely in the near future

Martin O'Neill reveals he hopes to call up Dundalk's Michael Duffy as soon as possible
The former Celtic man has been the best player in the League of Ireland this season

Michael Duffy is on the verge of a Republic of Ireland breakthrough.

Martin O’Neill has told Mirror Sport that he wants to add the Dundalk winger to his ranks as soon as possible

The former Celtic man has been the best player in the League of Ireland this season.

Duffy won’t be in O’Neill’s squad named today for the upcoming Wales and Poland games.

Having represented Northern Ireland up to U21 level, the Derry man requires international clearance from FIFA.

But O’Neill said: “I’ve a lot of time for that young man and I’m going to do something about it. I’ve spoken to him and I’d like to take him on.”

That's interesting. Does it mean Duffy / O'Neill / the FAI are actively applying for international clearance?

No, he must board the magic international plane of club football recognition before he plays for Ireland (i.e he must play 4 minutes and 37 seconds for Burton Albion before he gets five minutes against Andorra) . Then he'll be on the clear

Michael Duffy has declared for the Republic but won't decide on his club future until the end of the season.

Don’t see him staying reading that, not without a major wedge of cash.

It'll certainly be interesting with Stephen Kenny waiting in the wings whether LoI players get greater numbers being called up. If not at senior level but underage at least. Will there be a change in attitude toward the considered level of domestic players? Will they continue to be magically baptised as international calibre as soon as they cross the Irish Sea? Will SK give in to the self preservation element of picking players as per the status quo? The domestic league will not have changed by 2020 so will the likes of Michael Duffy and Sean Gannon be in with a shout of being capped while still at Dundalk? The more the dust settles on the 2 appointments to RoI senior management the more intriguing things become!

whatever about in two years when S.K. is expected to take over, I very much doubt many LOI players will make a full Irish squad in the near future. If Mick McCarthy didn't fancy signing Richie Towell from us for Ipswich when he was playing the best football of his career, he won't be playing him for Ireland

The first thing Mick should do is play a League of Ireland Eleven. Who would your money be on.

The LOI 11, don't think Mick has the legs to take them all on.

Last time a LOI X1 was put together, Utds 2nd team in pre season mode destroyed them
