There are dozens of players in the league who could strengthen the squad, making any kind of step up in Europe is a different thing though.

Not sure I agree with that. Dozens? Only if you’re setting the bar at the lads who never play like Folan and Lido.

If you look at the 14 who played against Rovers and add Dummigan, Jarvis, Boyle, Mountney, McCarey that’s our core 19, and there are very few players in the League that are noticeably better in their positions. Fewer again likely to be available.

We need a number 9 good enough for Europe, which is likely to be very expensive. We need good cover for Shields or ideally an improvement, and we might need a new left back.

In an attempt to find a bakers dozen among other LoI division clubs, this is the best I could come up with

David Parkhouse
Ciaron Harkin
Jamie McDonagh
Daragh Leahy
Daniel Mandriou
Zach Elbouzedi
Romeo Parkes
Conor Kearns
Liam Scales
Jack Byrne
Graham Burke
Aaron McEneff
Sean Kavanagh

I think that there are very few of these who would actually improve the core squad and less, if any, who would improve the starting eleven.

A striker with real pace must be the priority, but also the most difficult to source and definitely the most expensive. But if the club is serious about creating a realistic chance of European progress this is the critical one.

Apart from another high quality DM (is there a Stephen O'Donnell clone anywhere?), another quality winger to provide alternatives to Michael Duffy would be excellent particularly if he could play either wing (has Michael Duffy ever played right wing?).

If Jamie McGrath or Robbie Benson do not re-sign for any reason, high quality replacements would also be needed

There is also a call to be made on whether Sean Murray and Jordan Flores are likely to discover the fitness and form that was hoped for originally.

I'm setting the bar at the like of Dan Kelly who strengthened the squad, and I'm saying strengthening the squad is a vastly different thing to stepping up in Europe.

They're good but don't set the world on fire for me

Not sure any of those would make our matchday squad any better. The two things we had that we’ve missed most - a Towell type attacking midfielder who can drive the team forward and gets goals, and a midfielder who can dictate tempo - doesn’t seem to be available in the League. And there are no strikers good enough for Europe.

I think romeo parks is a diamond in the rough... he's nearly on the same amount of league goals than hoban.. yet playing for a mid table team. I'd say our boys would have him in the 20s . And he is lightening quick.

El Paso...if you listened to Treacys pod cast you would have heard him say Andy Burton was helping them professionalise the club in all areas. His job is not only recommending players, moreso he is very much involved in getting the day to day things within the club to a professional level. He also recommends player and I have it from an ex player that no player is signed without Vinnys OK. Burton taps into his network, suggests players and Vinny says yes or no. At no time have the club said he is being paid by DFC and if anything he could very well also be on the Peak6 payroll working as a consultant for them as they have publically admitted they dont have a clue about the day to day things involved in running a club.

Alan Cawley said we're 'sniffing around Greg Sloggett' on the RTE pod this evening.

Derry midfielder. He'd be a 6, so competition for Shields.

So he would be on the bench so. No competition to shields in the league.
