Yeah, but this isn’t about saying players can’t improve or should be at the top level when they get here. The implication of the message is that they’ll contribute very little in their first year. It was wheeled out for Dylan Connolly a lot. We’re not a club that can afford to carry players in that fashion if it’s all about Europe.

Chris Shields contract extension until the end of the 2021 announced via DFCs instagram, great to see the business being done early

Yeah that bugs me. Why not say the length of the contract instead of saying "long term" we now know that long term can be as short as 18 months

Bit odd alright.

Still I’m glad he’s here another two seasons. Squads require refreshing, but him, Garts and Massey are the lads with the culture who make us the Champions we are

Yes but you can't just overload the training as that leads to injuries. Players coming from part time clubs moving to full time training require time to bed in. You can't expect them to go from part time all the way up to what the likes of ganno Massey shields have been doing for the past 7 seasons. If you overload them immediately they will get injured. You have to be prudent in how you develop them going forward.

I think you are perfectly entitled to be irritated by how the club announced his contract signing at the end of last April:
Dundalk FC are delighted to announce that Chris Shields has signed a contract extension.

The midfielder, who was recently crowned SSE Airtricity League Player of the Year for 2018, has agreed a long-term contract at the club.
https://www.dundalkfc.com/shields-signs ... extension/

As he was already in contract to least the end of 2019 at that time, most people would interpret that new 'long-term contract' to have been at least to end of 2021 or even 2022.

Attempts to suppress and control journalists reports last season coupled with misleading statements like this don't do anything for the credibility of the communications from the club.

I hope Gavin McLaughlin is allowed do his job with integrity

Interesting reveal from VP in his post match interview with Gerry Malone that Derry City striker Tim Nilsen was a player he was tracking.

He might be 'one that got away' based on his lively debut tonight

Just to digress a wee bit: I see that Cork have sold on their buy on options on their 2 Preston players.
I was wondering - do we have any such players?

No. We have not sold any players. All our players who moved to the UK were out of contract.

Cork had a large Revenue bill (rumours between 200K and 600K) and it supposedly was preventing them getting a licence. Preston bailed them out, basically.

Update on Stefan Colovic, who will wear the number 22 shirt for Dundalk, is that the club are still waiting for his work visa to process. That could happen in “the next couple of days, or it could be a week” according to Vinny Perth

I picked up on that myself when I heard the interview, but you wont get all the players you go for, a lot of players will also only go to clubs where they think they will start.

I often think our set up with one up front can be a deterrent to players joining, but this is the modern game, the tried and trusted 4-4-2 is long gone, and on that I always regret not having that conversation with Jim Murphy (RIP) before about previous DFC league winning teams, on their formation, it would have been period influenced.

For example in 1988, double winning season, we varied from 5-4-1 to 5-3-2, maybe even 1-4-3-2 at times, on that, the 1 was Joey Malone, the classic example of a career over when the back pass law came in early 90's. Great player at what he did mind, the sweeper, probably a role lost in space now.

Good post Mike. You are right about the sweeper role. It has almost been replaced by the holding Midfielder in that they stop the ball getting at the back four. The modern way seems to be based on playing out from the back with two or three centre backs defending, most can carry the ball out and the two full backs almost playing like wingers and defending a little. The Goalie is basically the sweeper now. Some of the formations are clever and interesting to watch. I was interested to see Vinny experimenting with the 3 in pre season but reverting back to his preferred system the other night. I continue to be impressed by Vinny. He also seems to have done well with his signings although it's early days yet. Leahy and Sloggett look great for the future, Flores looks ready and Smith looks promising. I believe Patching will be special if his head is right. I saw him play for City against United under age teams a couple of years ago and he was the best player on the pitch. I am really looking forward to seeing Colovic to see what he can bring? It will be another interesting ride again this season. Enjoy it lads?
