Presumably Ali Reghba can play wide as well as through the middle

Not that I know, but he could be an interesting signing for the future. He will turn 19 in January and is out of contract at Bohs - he has been over to Leicester City on trial last month and has also attracted a fair bit of interest from Leeds and Middlesboro among others.

According to todays Indo Shamrock Rovers are the current favourites to sign him.

Given his age profile, I'd be surprised if he didn't go to England. He's got enough talent that a Championship club will take a punt on him.

Rovers doing their best to sign every available player, though, before shipping them onto Pats in a year or two.

Skip set to be offered terms it seems - presumably VP will want to get some assurances on his fitness levels

No Stephen O'Donnell at pre-season training this morning but Vinny Perth said he wants the skipper at the club next season and hopes to have it sorted in the next week

I’d love to see O’Donnell signed back, he would give further comfort in the continuity the club are installing.

However, we are a business and this has to be a good decision pending his fitness. A solid professional like O’Donnell will know only too well this has to go side by side.

Another loan spell possibly? Glentoran are having a desperate season so in general that experience along with the loan being cut short will have done his confidence no good at all.

Sam Byrne is the oddest thing I've seen in years. Completely unfit when signed, stayed completely unfit. Gets a contract anyway, loaned out to get fit and flops. Seemingly not in our plans at all.

If it turns out that the two of the contracted squad who are the most obvious weak links are moved on it augurs well for the decision making abilities of the management team.

Looks like O'Donnell is retiring. He was a great player when fit which wasn't enough of the time. Only played 100 games over 6 seasons. Very low amount for a Captain of a team. Not a case of needing to replace him necessarily as we have done well without him so many times.

If Chris Shields is fatigued, injured, suspended or suffers a loss of form we could be very vulnerable.

We also need the alternative range of skills and abilities that Skip took to the pitch, with a knack for changing the pace and direction of a game, rather than just provide a midfield anchor or defensive screen

Hard to say goodbye to Stevie as a player. He always had something that the rest of the midfield lacked, and that was a calmness and composure under pressure on the ball. As pointed out already, however, Dundalk have spent so long coping without him, there's no sense of panic about doing without.

Personally, I'm a big fan of McEleney playing in deep beside Shields. He's the closest thing to a like for like replacement, although he doesn't have O'Donnell's aggression in the tackle. Though, as a partnership, himself and Shields have a bit of everything.

I entirely disagree with that, to be honest. We've done fine without him against the dross that is most of our League. He is exactly what we've been missing in the tougher games.
