Hopefully some of the injuries and knocks among those who played against Shamrock Rovers will have cleared up in time for the visit of Waterford

We certainly need more dominance and drive in central midfield and more clinical finishing is essential. Stephen Kenny had a track record of sticking with players in a bad run of form once he believed in them. I suspect that VP will do something similar and resist the temptation to start Georgie Kelly.

He came on as sub in the last 20 minutes at home to Bohs last Friday. He also got 15 minutes the previous Friday in the 2-0 win away to Cork

Georgie Kelly got 90 minutes against Athlone, one of the poorest teams the country has seen, and couldn't muster a goal. He needs to take any opportunities given to him, and I don't see him starting in place of hoban any time soon.

Not saying kelly is the answer but hoban has looked a shadow of last year's striker.. not sharp not hungry poor hold up play and zero confidence.

For what it’s worth, Pat Hoban is the best striker in the league bar none. I think it would be counterproductive to drop him 5 games into the season and it would look like the management is panicking

With Rob Harvey in charges anything can happen (in our favour or against us!) - strong contender for Worst Ref in the League award

Officials for Dundalk FC v Waterford FC
Ref: Rob Harvey
Asst: Wayne McDonnell
Asst: Darragh Keegan
4th: Robert Rogers

I wouldn’t drop Hoban, I’d replace him earlier if it wasn’t working though.

Maybe with the players we have out and to combat Hery we should look at bringing Clery in with Hoare in front of the back four, a narrow midfield of Duffy, Murray, McGrath and two up front. Hoban might get his mojo back if George Kelly creates more space for him. Lot of pressure on Gannon and Massey in that but it plugs the gaps. Or maybe Dummigan is the number 6 we’re crying out for?

Harvey? We’ll do well to end with 11v11. He’s a dope.

Apart from 3 points obviously, the big thing we need to do on Friday is score first. Haven't done that yet in four games. Rovers have shown tonight that scoring first makes a huge difference to opening up the game. Harps appear to have caved completely once they went a goal down.

When we gift the other team something to hang on to, like in the first three matches, it makes it twice as hard to get something from the game.

In the absence of McEleney and Benson and while we're waiting to see what the new guys can bring, maybe go two up top and just bludgeon them?

DELIVEROO Dundalk coach John Gill wants better supply to Patrick Hoban after slow start to League of Ireland season
The striker bagged 29 goals on the way to landing the double with the Lilywhites but has struggled this campaign

By Owen Cowzer
3rd March 2019, 10:45 pmUpdated: 3rd March 2019, 10:45 pm

JOHN GILL has told Dundalk’s midfield to feed Patrick Hoban with good quality ball and the goals will flow again.

Hoban was a big part of Dundalk’s Double win last season, bagging 29 goals.

But he has started this year slowly and all he has to show from the opening four games is a penalty against UCD.

Gill, an addition to the coaching team under new boss Vinny Perth, believes that Hoban’s problem is not a lack of confidence. Instead, it is a lack of chances.

He said: “I just think you have to give him better ball.

“If you’re going to have Hoban in your team — and you look at the goals he got last year — you’ve got to feed him.

“The final ball into the box has to be better and if you do that he’ll score.

“But if you’re not doing that or you take an extra pass or you have a bad touch, nobody is going to score goals. We have to look at that as a team.”

Gill admitted Hoban was feeding off scraps in Friday’s 0-0 draw with Shamrock Rovers but hopes that a full week’s work will mean a better showing against Waterford.

He is also not troubled by the Lilywhites’ slow start, which has yielded one win and three draws.

He said: “It’s a dancing competition at the moment and everyone is sparring. There are some strange results, it’s going to be that type of league.

“But it started like that last year, then Dundalk ignited and pushed on. That’s what you’re hoping will happen.”

Gill also revealed that Patrick McEleney (knee) and Robbie Benson (leg) remain out for the foreseeable future, with no return date set for either at the moment.

But McEleney, who has a knee problem, will definitely not be back this month as he must wear a protective boot for the next three weeks.

I didn't think McEleney would be back until May at the earliest, so if that's correct it's a boost.

It's probably easier to predict the Waterford team than our own starting line-up right now

Subject to fitness

Matthew Connor
Rory Feely | Damien Delaney | Kenny Browne | Kevin Lynch*
JJ Lunny | Shane Duggan | Bastien Hery | Zach Elbouzedi
Ismail Akinade | AN Other**

* Kevin Lynch went off injured against Derry after 30 minutes to be replaced by Georgie Poynton, who retained the left back position in following match against Bohs.

** Waterford have started with Aaron Drinan. Cory Galvin or Scott Twine in an attacking role in different matches so far this season (Twine and Drinan started together with Akinade on the bench in the 2-3 defeat away to Derry, where Galvin scored after replacing Twine)

Karolis Chvedukas will probably be on the bench for them

It's a strong team with Bastien Hery the stand-out player although the whole midfield is strong. Akinade has tended to cause us problems (much the same as Daniel Carr has). The centre backs are an obvious weakness with either player having the nimbleness of a turning Titantic. Whether Kevin Lynch is fit or Georgie Poynton plays could also be significant
