Sligo Rovers V Dundalk | Sat 4 March | 7.45pm | Showgrounds

Postby Ezeikial » Sun Feb 26, 2017 12:41 pm

The Sligo fans will be certainly be looking for their team to bounce back after their hiding in Limerick, while our injury list may be a significant factor.

As far as I know, none of the players missing from the Friday night are expected to be fit, while O'Donnell and McEleney and Benson seem to have taken knocks that may make some of them doubtful.

There is no easy games in this lge and this year I feel will be the hardet of all because with 3 teams being relegated everyone will be fighting for their life's to stay up and Sligo will be licking their wounds and will want a better performance in front of a home ground next Saturday.

People at Markets Field Friday night are saying that Sligo didnt look to be as fit as they should. I'd have expected them to carry their late season form in to this season rather than the awful start they had last year but with them seemingly throwing in the towel after conceding, maybe not. They will be looking to bounce back but bar our injury list getting longer we should expect a win!

Rovers Review - Schlingermann

Michael Schlingermann reflected on a tough few days following the opening weekend defeat to Limerick.

He said he and the whole squad are focused on repaying the disappointed fans with a much-improved display when Dundalk visit this Saturday.

Schlingermann was the first guest of the year on Ocean FM’s Rovers Review and he summed up his emotions to Darragh Cox:

“It’s been a tough weekend. A couple of restless night’s sleep. It’s not the result we wanted. We have to get on the training ground and put that wrong right.

“You want to get off to a good start. You want to give the supporters something exciting for the season ahead. They’ve worked hard all week and spent their money to travel down to Limerick and unfortunately, we didn’t give them anything to cheer about for the whole game. I was a bit embarrassed going down thanking them after because of the result.

“We have had bad results and we managed to come back. We went on a good run actually after a bad defeat to Bray early last year. We have to take that and learn from that and hopefully do the same. We must view our season as starting all over again now. It’s a home game.

“I am sure the supporters that travelled will be very disappointed but they’ll come out again I am sure and back us. We need to repay that commitment by putting in a performance. The only thing they deserve is a performance by us on Saturday against Dundalk. The most important thing is to put in a performance that everybody can be proud of and say that we have improved, though that won’t be hard, but by an awful lot.”

Sligo Rovers website piece includes a 4 minute review of the 0-3 horror match in Oriel last season

Rovers v Dundalk - Saturday

Rovers are back at The Showgrounds this Saturday night!

The opening home game of the 2017 season will see the Bit o’Red against Dundalk, kick-off 7:45pm.

The visitors are three-time defending SSE Airtriicty League champions.

All three games between the teams last year were extremely close. Firstly, there was two narrow 1-0 wins for the Lilywhite, first at Oriel Park and then The Showgrounds.

In the most recent meeting Rovers took a 3-0 win from Oriel Park last October. View the goals below.

The Bit o’Red are seeking to bounce back from a disappointing lost away to Limerick which began the season at the weekend. Dundalk, meanwhile, had a 2-1 home win against Shamrock Rovers to start the season.

This game is the first in a succession of Showgrounds games the next three weekends being followed by a visit of St. Patrick’s Athletic on March 10 and Bray Wanderers on March 18.

Team news

Chris Shields remains sidelined with a groin problem as does David McMillan (kneecap) and Gary Rogers (calf). Shane Grimes is a long term absentee with a hamstring problem while Seán Hoare also has a groin problem and is ruled out of the trip west. Patrick McEleney has recovered from the knock he sustained last Friday while Stephen O’Donnell is a doubt with the thigh injury which forced him off in the second half against Rovers and will undergo a late fitness test to determine his availability.

I would def start Clifford if O'Donnell is ruled out. Thought Mountney had a solid match v Rovers so he def stays in the side. The competition for spots is already intense, even with the 3 big players out who started the cup final, you can see how hard it is for new signings to get into the side.

Interesting point, from the Rovers match, from all the new players, only one started, Duffy.

There will be plenty of games for everyone though, young McGrath looks an excellent prospect, bog things are also expected from Kinsella. We know what Vemmelund is like, but I have to say I am really looking forward to seeing what Hoare is like. He is probably a few weeks away though.

Anyway hopefully the match will still go ahead, it seems like its been raining all over the country for half the day, I think it will, seems to be a decent pitch they have.

Safe travels to all.
