Kenny Shiels

Nice to see Kenny S planning for next season. Hopefully he will remain as Derry manager.

Although he's an absolute rocket of a man, there is a charm about him. The way he handled the Ryan McBride situation was very commendable and classy. He has a brutal honesty that is sure to get him into lots of trouble but I genuine believe that he believes in everything he says, no matter how off the wall it sounds. Characters like himself, Ollie Horgan and Stephen Henderson are good for our league. One thing that was very noticeable last night was that he held on after the full time whistle and our celebrations to embrace Stephen Kenny and offer his good wishes.

Kenny is great entertainment, but his bosses at Derry (and the fans) care more about his teams' performances on the pitch, rather than his own sideline antics. The longer this season has gone on, the poorer the results. I'm not sure if the EA Sports Cup is enough to offset their league form.

The chairman has been pumping £300,000 a year into the club, and if they were to miss out on Europe, either the budget gets cut, or he increases that funding. Either way, the current setup seems unsustainable.

Great entertainment, but a nut case.

I can't see how Derry can persist with him

I'd call him eccentric rather than a nut case. Either way something has to give, he becomes more pragmatic in his choice of tactics ie playing it out from the back at all times with players that he himself would say lack experience, or Derry let him go. Its laudible that he wants to play football in a particular way but a young squad getting some bad drubbings more than a few times a season cant be good for their overall confidence which is important if you want to play the ball short and get players on the ball. When they do click though they are a nice team to watch, just far too brittle and defensively awful.

Eccentric is when he makes madcap post matches claims about the opposition or the referee, or when he expels Gerry Malone from a press conference (I think they are kindred spirits).

Nut case is when he persists with tactics that are making his team among the worst defensively or signs players who must be paid off in mid season, or who criticises his own players publicly.

Eccentric is interesting and entertaining, nut case is when he is harming his own club

The clubs must take some of the flack for the signing of players and then paying them off. Its all well and good giving a manager full control of his budget but if he is being reckless the club need to step in or are they nut cases too for letting him?

For clubs in the larger leagues having a Director of Football or Head of Recruitment who is responsible for identifying players to sign and conducting contract negotiations is fairly normal, but in this league that is unusual.

If Managers here tend to be given the freedom to sign the players they want within a budget, and as such must take responsibility for the success or failure of who they recruit.

In the case of Derry City the chairman is on record as saying that he intends to take a closer role in approving signings in the future - most observers regarded that as a vote of no-confidence in Kenny Shiels player signings

9 defeats out of final 10 league games speaks volumes..... derry might not have money but he signed most of those players. On the flip side he lost his better players. And looks like he lost the dressing room too if the last round of fixtures are anything to go on slipping from 4th down to 8th in the table.

They had a lost less after Sheils recruitment methods this season. It went very sour in the end after a couple of good seasons that included tragedy and the difficulty of not having home games. The highering and firing of players this season seemed born out of desperation and he just couldnt reconcile how he wanted to play with the players current ability or efforts. Maybe he should have been more pragmatic and seen out the season with hope of getting the close season to put things right.
It got humiliating with being criticised publically by his chairman, general rambling to media, storming out of interviews and finally saying that he had been told that he would still be in the job next season and next day he is sacked in a club Facebook post initially. I do feel sorry for Sheils for some strange reason, maybe it will be missing the mans antics next season, he did win the league cup and had at least one good performance in Europe. The players gave up the ghost in the final round, its not the first time that Doherty has had the finger pointed at him for being a disruptive influence either.
