1982 FAI Tour of South America

Postby mike » Tue Jun 10, 2014 3:23 pm

Spotted a gem of an article in Irish Times yesterday about the 1982 FAI tour of Sth America.

Time of Falklands war, FAI tried to play Argentina, English clubs naturally refused to release players, LOI were already gone to NZ on their own tour (Jim McL manager and a host of Dlk players) the rest you just couldn’t make it up, love the name of the key player in the FAI at the time, Peadar “Big Dinner” O’Driscoll

FAI should encourage something like this now. A reward for the players who stand out in the league and an opportunity to test themselves against exotic teams.

Tommy Mac RIP, told a great story about when the LOI select played in Argentina. The Dundalk back 5, Blackmore, Dunning, Keeley, Mac and a very young Martin Lawlor played V Argentina (not sure if it was u-21 or full squad). Anyway Martin was having a stinker in the first half with their young winger taking strips out of him. At HT McLoughlin decided to change things around a bit at the back and was looking for a volunteer to swap positions with Martin. Mac and Dermot stayed very silent hoping that they would be bypassed when Paddy Dunning offered to mark this young guy for the 2nd half. Not sure how the game ended but the young Argentinian ended up quite famous for scoring on of the greatest goals of all time in the World Cup. Oh yeah, he also scored "The Hand of God"

However the 1978 Argentina team vs LOI was more impressive...
