Dundalk V Finn Harps | Fri 19 Apr | 7:45pm | Oriel Park | Matchday 11

Glass half full or half empty

On one hard, it's hard to muster a lot of enthusiasm going into the Harps match on the back of 3 consecutive abject performances, but on the other hand a late winner for 3 points against Bohs along with the return of Chris Shields and Patrick McEleney does give grounds for some optimism.

While 3 points is essential, a strong performance would certainly help instill more positivity, confidence and optimism for both the players and supporters.

Shields doesn't look fit to me. Protect him and unleash him against the Rovers

Just looking at some stats. We really need to put Finn harps away because playing UCD in belfield, is not going to be easy. They have taken 10 points from 6 home games, only 3 begins us. I would just like to see us back playing good football. The midfield offered very little options to our centre backs who knocked the ball side to side and eventually had to knock it long. Someone in midfield needs to pick it, turn, drive forward and pass.

Exactly. It’s almost as if McEleney, Benson, Shields (and Murray) being injured has been really hard for us to cope with!

Having said that I think the mistake has been to persist with a 5 man midfield under the circumstances. Duffy is getting snuffed out, Hoban is getting no service and McGrath is getting overloaded. If we had to resort to being more direct we should have played a front two.

That's asking a lot of Chris. It's very difficult not to play football for 7 weeks and then be "unleashed" against a quality midfield.

IMO if he is 90% fit he should play some football between now and Rovers

While I don't agree with 3-5-2, I certainly feel Flores and McKee deserve more game time as they will be needed down the road. Harps are bottom with two points so this is as good as it gets - hopefully. Game time for Chris Shields is a difficult one. Friday might be too soon, and he could be needed more against UCD. He would need to come through unscathed though with only 4 days to Rovers.

Going by the table we couldnt have had two better fixtures to get back in business. Other fixtures allows us the chance to close any gaps also before we meet Rovers. Rushing anyone back at this stage regardless would be foolish, we need players fit from August on too to keep any winning form going in a run in. McKee and Flores need games and if we cant rely on them v Harps at home then why have them in the squad at all? Rushing a straped up Chris Shields back in to the starting 11 would seem to me like a desperate resort from management that are doing a bit of head scratching on what to do without first choice players. Confidence in reserve players might just snowball, boost their confidence and get them playing. Flores at least has a great delivery of a set piece which is worth a start under the circumstances imo.

Rather than play the convoluted 3-2-4-1 or 5-3-2-1, could we just play a good old fashioned 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 with Georgie Kelly up top with Hoban. It seems we've tried all kinds of permutations under the sun over the years at the back and up top, bar starting with two strikers. Friday could be a night to do it? Kelly certainly deserves a chance

Ollie Horgan is very optimistic by his own standards
“We’ll be up against it in Dundalk” - declares Finn Harps boss Ollie Horgan

“ We’ll be up against it in Dundalk tomorrow night. That win against Bohs on Monday night sets them up nicely so we’ll really need to be at the top of our game to cope with their attacking threat at Oriel Park. Ok, overall, they might not be going as well as expected but they are still a top side. Our lads are all set to go again and will be doing everything they can to get a result at Oriel Park," Horgan said

Team news

Robbie Benson remains out with a broken leg Sean Murray is also out with a groin problem and Stephen Folan misses out with a knee injury. Chris Shields and Patrick McEleney made their return from injury on Monday.

Referee is Robert Harvey so it is a lottery as to who will benefit from his usual erratic and bizarre decisions

I forgot that Stephen Folan was even at the club this season.

Same starting line up as last week?

Presumably Chris Shields needs more recovery time, but probably also needs game time if he is going to be fit for next Friday

Maybe start McEleney at no 10 with McGrath at no 8 and either Flores or McKee at no 6?

It's the least confident I have felt in a home game against the bottom team since we last played Monaghan Utd in Oriel

If McKee and Flores want to endear themselves to the OP patrons I’d suggest a few good tackles this evening

I would like to see the experiments to avoid playing a second striker ceased for the moment.

4-4-2 or 4-3-3 with both Hoban and Kelly playing

So a standard back four and Flores-McKee-McGrath-Duffy-Kelly-Hoban

No messing about - Garts, Massey, Shields, McEleney and Daniel Kelly all brought back. McEleney playing the number 8 role on the teamsheet.
