Dundalk V Slovan Bratislava | Tues 13 Aug | 8pm | Tallaght Stadium | Europa League QR3 Second Leg

Post by Ezeikial » Thu Aug 08, 2019 2:14 pm

Despite the disappointment of the first leg, we remain in a very good position and in with a decent chance of overcome a single goal deficit.

Hopefully there is a big european performance in this team - maybe next Tuesday night in Tallaght can be another to add to the list of exciting and memorable euro nights

There has been many excellent performances from supporters this season, next Tuesday night presents a challenge to make our presence felt and help create a special night
Dundalk head coach Vinny Perth has called on the club’s supporters – and the wider Irish football community – to pack Tallaght Stadium next Tuesday as the Lilywhites look to overturn a one goal deficit in their UEFA Europa League third qualifying round second leg tie with Slovan Bratislava.

Tallaght Stadium has been the scene of many good nights for Dundalk in Perth’s time at the club. League titles, EA Sports Cup finals and FAI cup semi-finals have all been won there, but some of the most memorable occasions have been reserved for European nights.

The most notable of all was the visit of BATE Borisov in 2016, when the Belarusian champions brought with them a 1-0 lead to defend but found it overturned as Dundalk sealed a famous 3-0 second leg win in the pouring rain.

Now Perth is hoping to recreate that sort of night both on and off the pitch, and he has called not only on Dundalk fans, but also supporters from the wider Irish football family, to come together and help create another memorable night in Tallaght.

“We have a part to play on the pitch, but I think we definitely need a big support. We need not just the people of Dundalk, but maybe some neutrals. People chat away about Irish football and everyone seems to have an opinion, but maybe it’s time we probably all dug in together and got one big European result for this team,” he said.

“I think it’s coming for them. We have to keep a clean sheet, obviously, but I think we’ll create chances next week. We’ll need a big night. Tallaght has been a special place for us over the years and hopefully it can be again next Tuesday.”

I’d go with the same starting 11. I liked the balance and think they did well. McGrath, Shields and Murray were the best players.

However I’d love to see us spring a surprise and go diamond with Shields, Murray, Benson, McGrath behind two up top.

If Robbie Benson was fit enough for Tuesday it would add a very significant extra string to our bow

For all the talk of the strength of the squad this season we have not had sufficient options in midfield and up front to be able to effect matches in the latter stages

On the basis that we need to score at least two goals and possibly three, perhaps Daniel Kelly needs more involvement.

Would VP be willing to start him, despite his defensive limitations and inexperience?

If it is a rib fracture, it takes on average six weeks for a rib to heal. It will also depend on the person involved and their power of recovery. Not a likely starter I think.

It was never confirmed as a rib fracture. It was reported as 'suspected' before he had an x-ray or met a specialist.

In the Team News for the Cobh match, it says he has an outside chance of being available following his "rib injury"

Only 2 blocks remaining in West Stand (at end of stand - old away end). Still good choice in East Stand, including Block N on half way line

I'm starting to really feel bullish for this game, it was of course very disappointing to lose so late in the first leg, and we did miss that glorious chance by Duffy, but they did deserve to win to be fair. Plus its only 0-1, could have been miles worse.

We may not be scoring in europe this season, but we would all have bitten your hand off if this was offered pre season, to be in with a chance of making the play off with one game remaining, granted we will have to win by 2 goals, but we've been here before, many times. A lot will think about the BATE game in 2016, but another one which was winner takes all was Cork 2014, final game, a draw wouldn't be enough and we could only start relaxing a bit when we went 2-0 up very late.

This is very achievable on Tuesday night folks.

If Mike is feeling bullish, then there is definitely something in the air. I just hope it lingers through till Tuesday night

Slovan rested some oftheir top players on Saturday evening. However, goal scorer vs Dundalk, Holman, went off injured. Not sure how serious it is.

On the other end their club record signing Rabiu was back in action. He is absolutely superb and was by far the best player on the pitch

Thanks again for the insight. How do Dundalk compare to the UK, which division would you put us in?
