Best ever

Just curious about everyone's opinions on our best ever player, is it someone from our more recent bunch of legends or someone from days gone by?

Martin lawlor for me.. best defender i have seen. Was fortunate to be going up since 1977.

Alan O'Neill for me growing up as a kid. Amazing servant and reliable.

Martin Lawlor albeit in the 80s and Gino lawless. Not really narrowing it down there.

Of recent vintage, Daryl Horgan by a country mile for me.

The few clips available from the 80s and 90s makes me reevaluate how good some players were as the standard isn't great. But when I was a kid it was Barry Kehoe. Stuff seemed to happen when he was on the ball.

So Daryl Horgan for me now too. Only a couple of seasons in comparison to the legends, but the more the whirlwind that was 2016 slips into history, the more we'll truly appreciate how amazing it was. And he was the pick of our players in that run.

A question with many answers.

Barry Keohe of course as favourite local. Amazing skill, strength and vision and would have complemented the 2016 side without doubt.

From the 2016 squad Ritchie and Darryl stand out but Ronan Finn was the glue that bonded it all together.

From todays squad both long serving Sean Gannon and the wonderful Chris Shields also have a claim. Pat Hoban as all time leading goalscorer has to be up there also.

But to answer your question:
My favourite player growing up was the recently deceased Jimmy Dainty. An amazing talent we were lucky enough to have during another great era for Dundalk. And for me he is my favourite ever Dundalk FC player

My favourites; Big James Coll for his no-nonsense (though would struggle to trap a bag of cement!), Martin Murray for his guile -- exuded class at all times. Terry Eviston if only for his goal celebration but the man who typified Dundalk FC for me and if his passion and commitment to Dundalk FC could be bottled, I would do so ---my all-time great is the One Martin Lawlor.

I can't really go much further back than the '88 Double winning side memory wise, and it's hard to look past players from the last few years in the majority of positions. Although funnily enough I can't think of many right-sided midfielders and suspect Dainty would get the nod among older supporters. Plenty of left-wing options...

Anyway:

O'Neill
Gannon-Coll-Malone-Massey
Lawless-Shields-Kehoe
Towell-Hoban-Horgan

Subs: Rogers, Gartland, Lawlor, O'Donnell, McNulty, McMillan

1970-2010
Paul Newe and Dave Connell did not play enough
and list is missing Geno Lawless, Hilda Carlyle, Yorkie Byrne and Martin Murray who were all brilliant and loved by the fans

Neither did Bobby Smith who played for only one season around 1974 - but as an athletic footballer and a person he captured my imagination.

Ironically Paul Newe had more appearances than Hilary Carlyle, according to DUNDALK F.C. WHO'S WHO wbesite

I take your point though, if it was about a Hall of Fame - but this is my list of favorites or my 'Best Ever' list

Agreed that Gino Lawless, Hilary Carlyle, Sean Byrne and Martin Murray were all brilliant too

Don't remember Bobby Smith, did not make it to oriel until 75-76 season. In terms of players who made a big impression in short periods I do remember Alan Spavin who was great and what was the players who played about 10 games and scored as many goals, we had him on loan, I think in 76/77? Jimmy?
