Re: 2022 Rumours | Transfers | Contract Renewals v2
While I understand people's concerns about cover for various positions, the club has to draw a line somewhere. There has be a limit on salaries. There is no European football which - given our coefficient - could probably earned us close to 500k after outlay. We will have the most changed squad of those clubs looking for 3rd spot and it will take players longer to gel. Europe is the best we can hope for this year unless Rovers have a nightmare start. The days of expecting 2 of the top 4 to contest the cup final are also gone in my opinion. You qualify for Europe on merit.
It's easy to be concerned about multiple players getting injured but it comes back to the old chestnut about squad players not getting enough game time to be able to make a difference when called upon. If SOD is going to stick with the same side every week, it will all be down to time off the bench. A player can't just slot in. The big question of course is formation. "Flat 4" and "wing backs" require very different talents from players. For me, the only real area of concern is LB, at least in terms of having someone two footed in the squad. Dummigan was a real find in that he could easily switch sides, even in the middle of a game. If we don't get someone, my money would be on Mountney. He generally plays on the right, but certainly has a powerful left leg.

Cover at left back and a left winger and I think we're ready to go. Connolly as well who can play at right full.

The devolution of the right back position - Gannon -> Dummigan -> Jurkovskis -> Bone! From the best there was, to makeshift, in 12 months.

Plus not even a great move for Gannon, he didn't play near enough as he would have expected at Rovers, the 3 at the back didn't suit him.
Pity he signed a long term deal with them, I'd have him back in a flash.

Jurkovskis was a better technical player then Gannon. He hadn't a bad season, but was managed by 3 different people and had a liability behind him in Abibi.
Gannon had a mostly stable environment when he was involved.

I hope not as he is a center half. Mountney's best position is central midfield but again like Bone could cover at right back.
I trust O'Donnell though and he has seen enough of Bone and Mountney to make the right call if they are good enough

Jurkovskis was very good getting forward but I thought his defending left a lot to be desired for, especially and given he was a full international, but a good player nonetheless.
I think Bone played RF in cup final, but I know he also covered a lot of other areas, I would have thought he was signed as a RF, but I could be wrong, so as things stand who is the fav to get the no 2 top for the first league game ?

Connolly signed on an initial 6 month loan deal. From his comments it sounds like he wants to stay close to home so maybe it could be made permanent in the summer

Squad taking shape now.
It will change depending on who is up to fitness / form / injury free, but we might be looking like something not far off this?
................................Shepperd...................
Bone.............Boyle...........Connolly...........Leahy
.....................Sloggett.........Doyle / Williams........
Kelly.......................Benson.................Adams
..............................Hoban.......................
12 - Williams / Doyle
13 - Ward
14- McMillan
15 - Martin
16 - Gartland (coming back from injury)
17- Mountney (injured)
18 - Mayota
19 - Cherrie
Who else, I`m sure I`ve missed one or two, apart from O'Kane ? Plus we probably have one more to come - cover for Left full ?

I wouldn't expect any more signings to be honest. 36 leagues and a possible 5 cup games, no league cup or leinster senior cup.
I like the squad though. I think we'll be competitive and exciting to watch

No reason why Hanratty wouldn't be involved. Shamrock Rovers had a lot of teenagers in their Squad for their recent friendly. They have a better youth set up then Dundalk but Dundalk should be aiming to bring players through also.

I wonder who the trialist is at right back?
Edit: There are two trialists in the squad tonight.
