Local Athletes win Silver in World Championships

Postby Ezeikial » Sat Jul 14, 2018 4:27 pm

Being presented to the crowd at the Europa League match on Thursday in Oriel would be brilliant way to recognise the achievements of Patience Jumbo-Gula of St Gerard’s AC and Gina Akpe-Moses Blackrock AC for their part in winning the silver medal .

Get Amy Broadhurst in there as well

LOCAL PAIR HELP IRISH WOMEN’S 4X100M RELAY TEAM TO SILVER MEDAL SUCCESS

Two local athletes were part of the Irish women’s 4x100m relay team who have won a silver medal at the Under-20s IAAF World Championships in Finland.

St Gerard’s AC’s Patience Jumbo-Gula and Blackrock AC’s Gina Akpe-Moses, along with Molly Scott and Ciara Neville produced a strong overall performance from lane five to secure the second-place finish in a time of 43.90 and were almost in contention for a gold medal.

They came in just behind winners Germany with Great Britain taking third place.

I'm actually a coach with St. Gerards' and it is a fantastic achievement for the girls. Gina actually started her athletics journey with us before joining Blackrock AC and eventually moving to the UK. Patience set a new European u18 championship record at the u18 European championships in Hungary last week in the semi final before finishing 5th in the final. Then she went immediately to Tempere in Finland where the girls won Silver in the 4x100 relay at the World U20 championships setting a new National record. We also had another of our athletes Kate O'Connor who is only u17 selected by Northern Ireland to compete at this years Commonwealth games in Australia where she finished I think it was 6th in the Heptathlon. Add to that all the national titles and records our club athletes have won this year it really has been a remarkable season for Dundalk St. Gerards AC.
Dundalk Fc. First Irish club to win points in group stages of a major European Competition.
