It looks like this could actual happen with Linfield facing the 2019 league winners over 2 legs in November

I really don't see what a trade union gets out of this. I would also hate to see Mr Ogle using it as some kind of bandstand.

It would be premature to put the dates in the diary, but it is certainly something we hope to be involved in

It is fairly unlikely but if the winners of the league make the Europa League group stages there is a game scheduled for the 7th November.

I wonder if the League of Ireland should tweak the season and instead of a February-October season fall back in line with everyone else but with an early start and keep the winter break.

I'm thinking 18 rounds on 18 Fridays between the start of August and the end of November, then 18 more rounds on 18 more Fridays between the end of January and the end of May. The FAI Cup matches could be on the bank holiday Mondays, culminating in the FAI Cup Final on the June bank holiday. The League Cup could be played midweek in the Autumn with the Final at the end of the first round of League matches.

This Unite competition could be held in June the week after the Cup Final, while the President's Cup could be turned into a semi-final and final effort between the four European teams to get match fit for Europe at the beginning of July.

The League gets its best support and best coverage during the spring and autumn, but struggles for attention in the height of summer. Something like this is only a tweak to the calendar, but solves the nonsense of seeing half the season completed in the first three months.

I'm generally in favour of summer football in terms of weather and logistics, and we can debate the weather, fixture list, coordinating with our nearest neighbours etc until the cows come home.

But any argument in favour of winter football has to acknowledge that you'd basically be giving up on making any progress in Europe. Results in Europe are hard enough to come by when we're at 100%... playing them in preseason would be madness IMO.

The real break with that system is still December. The champions wouldn't finish til second week of June and would start again in early July. Same as now. This way there wouldn't be all the fuckacting with League fixtures that goes on. The point is coming, if it's not already here, where the other clubs will want financial compensation for moving so many matches to Mondays to facilitate the teams in Europe.

We already know this new competition clashes with the Europa League group stages, is in the middle of the Northern season, and (theoretically) the champions' players could be out of contract for it.
