Dundalk V Waterford | Monday 1 July | 7.45pm | Oriel Park |Matchday 23

Another great opportunity to take another big step towards the league title. The 3 points is most important, but after a below par performance in Tallaght, it would be great if we can raise the standard.

The management have indicated that there will be some rotation of the side and it will be interesting to see the extent of this. McGrath, Murray and Benson in particular need to be phased back in, but this also needs to be combined with a practical effectiveness in the team. That wasn't present in the starting line up / first half against Rovers and this needs to be addressed

The defence is not of particular concern and we may see Cleary and/or Jarvis being rotated back in after suspension. Dummigan starting may be a step too far if there are 2 other defensive changes, but surely he should expect a starting chance at some point soon.

Patrick Hoban was disappointing on Friday and it is a small possibility that Georgie Kelly could be drafted in to give him a rest.

Other interesting aspects to Monday night
1) First streaming match under new pilot programme
2) Open sale after the match for any remaining Champions League tickets for Riga match

Only if his international clearance arrives in time. I suspect it is doubtful

Team news

There was good news on Friday evening with both Jamie McGrath and Robbie Benson making their returns after lengthy absences with foot and leg injuries respectively. Daniel Cleary and Dean Jarvis return from their suspensions having missed Friday evening. Jordan Flores misses out with a hip flexor problem and new signing Andy Boyle is ineligible until Friday evening.

I wonder will we see Dummigan start and Gannon rested with Derry and Europe in mind? Might see a bit of rotation with maybe Hoare replacing Cleary and Kelly replacing Mountney.

Hoban is back in the place-at-risk territory after the other night. Expect to see McGrath and Benson come in off the bench again.

MATCH PREVIEW: Dundalk -v- Waterford FC (01/07/2019)
News, News Article
SSE Airtricity League Premier Division
Dundalk -v- Waterford FC
Monday, July 01, 2019
Kick Off: 7.45pm
Referee: Derek Tomney

After Friday’s late defeat, Waterford FC are on the road this Monday with a trip to face league leaders Dundalk.

There was late heartbreak on Friday as Michael Barker scored a late winner for Bohemians who picked up a 2-1 win in the RSC.

A Rory Feely own goal had given Bohs the lead before Barker put into his own net to level before the break. But defender Barker then struck a 93rd-minute winner.

Despite the defeat, manager Alan Reynolds will have taken plenty of encouragement after a good performance on Friday night.

Manager View: Speaking ahead of Monday’s trip to Dundalk, manager Alan Reynolds said:

“We were really disappointed to concede late and lose on Friday. It was a good performance and we’ll take lots of positives from it and look to bring that into Monday.

“Dundalk are the champions and league leaders but we have to go and compete there. They’re an excellent team but we have quality, too; we need to make sure we’re on our game and we’ll give it a go.”

Team News: Zack Elbouzedi and Kevin Lynch remain sidelined while Karolis Chvedukas and Dean Walsh are also expected to miss the game through injury. Georgie Poynton returns from suspension while Dean O’Halloran is available for selection after completing a loan spell with Bray Wanderers.

Waterfords line up in the home defeat to Bohs last Friday
Waterford: Matthew Connor, Rory Feely, Damien Delaney, Maxi Kouogun, Rob Slevin, Shane Duggan, Karolis Chvedukas (Shane Griffin 87), JJ Lunney, Bastien Héry, John Martin (Cory Galvin 64), Dean Walsh
If the Waterford team news is accurate Karolis Chvedukas and Dean Walsh drop out of the side probable to be replaced by Georgie Poynton and Dean O Halloran

If Zack Elbouzedi is still out Cory Galvin or John Martin could start while the stated absence of Kevin Lynch at left back leaves them short of an experienced option in that position. Kenny Browne was an unused sub on Friday

Probable

Connor
Feely | Delaney | Kouogun | Slevin
Poynton | Duggan | Hery | Lunny | Gavin
O'Halloran

It's not the time (yet) for wholesale player rotation, but let's not overstretch anyone. Perhaps 1 or 2 regular starters could be rested, but let's kick on and get another 6 pts on the board before the insanity really start with Europe.

Massey, Garts, Murray and Mountney out, Jarvis Cleary, McGrath, Dano Kelly in.
Chris Shields still playing with strapping on the knee. It's fair to say we haven't really figured out how to play without him.

Of even greater importance than resting players is getting others fit. It's a delicate balance to keep all the squad at the right fitness level, but getting the players returning from injury to a match fit level is the biggest task.

Balancing this right while still getting 3 points is big challenge

Keith Wallace's match preview in the Demo
PREVIEW | Dundalk FC 'can't afford to get complacent' as they welcome Waterford to Oriel Park

Jamie McGrath insists that Dundalk FC “can’t afford to get complacent”, with two important fixtures this week as they aim to maintain their clear lead at the top of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division ahead of the start of their European campaign.

McGrath returned from an absence of over eight weeks when coming off the bench at Tallaght Stadium on Friday, and it was the exciting young midfielder that unlocked the door for Seán Gannon’s 73rd minute winner.

The Athboy man had suffered a foot injury against Waterford at the end of April, and his bright cameo appearance against second-placed Shamrock Rovers may earn him a start against the struggling Blues when they visit Oriel Park on Monday night (kick-off 7:45pm).

Dundalk are unbeaten in 13 league games – winning 12 of those, including seven-in-a-row – and enjoy an eight-point advantage at the summit.

They face Waterford (eighth) and Derry City (fourth) this week, and McGrath stated that the prizes on offer are just as valuable as their top-of-the-table clash with Rovers.

“It’s still very early – there is a big six points to play for this week,” the 22-year-old said. “Three points on Monday night and Friday night are the same as against Shamrock Rovers.

“You saw Rovers were a good bit ahead earlier on in the season, so you can see how quickly it can change. We can’t afford to get complacent and maybe focus on Europe. We have to focus on each league game now and let Europe take care of itself when we get there.”

McGrath was alluding to Dundalk’s UEFA Champions League campaign, which gets underway with the first qualifying round first leg against Latvian champions Riga at Oriel Park next Wednesday evening.

The club announced on Sunday that general sales for that highly-anticipated clash will commence on Monday, at the ticket hatches outside the ground immediately after the Waterford game. There are approximately 1,000 tickets available for general sale, after the close of priority sales on Friday.

Meanwhile, the July transfer window officially opens on Monday, but Dundalk have stated that the returning Andy Boyle will not be eligible for selection until the trip to Derry at the end of the week.

Defensive duo Daniel Cleary and Dean Jarvis are available again after they both served one-match suspensions, but midfielder Jordan Flores (hip flexor) remains out. Centre-half Stephen Folan’s knee injury has also resurfaced.

Dundalk have comfortably defeated Waterford in both meetings so far this season, with a 4-0 win – albeit a harsh scoreline – at Oriel Park in March followed by a 3-0 victory in that aforementioned encounter in April.

Waterford have attacking issues, with strike-pair Aaron Drinan and Ismahil Akinade recently departing. They completed the loan signing of midfielder Sam Bone from Shamrock Rovers on Sunday.

In their team news bulletin for the trip to Dundalk, they state that Zack Elbouzedi and Kevin Lynch remain sidelined, while Karolis Chvedukas and Dean Walsh are also expected to miss the game through injury. Georgie Poynton returns from suspension while Dean O’Halloran is available for selection after completing a loan spell with Bray Wanderers.

Alan Reynold’s men went down 2-1 to Bohemians at the RSC on Friday after an injury-time concession, and they have won just one of their last eight outings on the road.

They have not won in Dundalk since January 2003 when a late Daryl Murphy lob virtually sealed the First Division title.

Monday’s game will also see the start of a pilot project which will allow overseas supporters to stream four of Dundalk’s upcoming league games at a price of €9.99, or an individual game at a cost of €3.99. Full details are available on the club’s official website, dundalkfc.com.
