Waterford V Dundalk | Mon 9 Sept | 7.45pm | RSC | FAI Cup Quarter Final

Post by Ezeikial » Sat Sep 07, 2019 11:17 am

There is a lot of matches looming that could easily distract the players attention away from what some commentators might see as a routine task in Waterford on Monday night. The EA Sports Cup final next Saturday and the possibility of clinching the league title in the re-arranged match against Shamrock Rovers on 23 Sept provides a possibility of distracting focus from the match in hand.

If the league is the priority, at this point of the season it is followed closely in importance by the FAI Cup. Even if Waterford are sitting well down the table, they have shown that they have the ability to raise their game on occasion.

Squad rotation choices and managing player fitness are really big issues considering the scheduled of games and the team selections will be interesting as usual.

Complacency and fatigue are probably the biggest challenges faced by VP and the management team. This may not be the sroll in the park that some expect.

Daniel Kelly to start?
Brian Gartland to play alongside Sean Hoare?
Dane Massey or Dean Jarvis?
Patrick Hoban or Georgie Kelly?
Robbie Benson to get another start?

Surprised Garts did not play more in the last few games, although he was blowing hard at the end of UCD at home. I would give him a run on Monday along with Dan Kelly plus Georgie upfront. Benson may need to play because of lack of alternatives, probably should be eased in better. Would also give Dummigan a start, need to keep players fresh

Dummigan was so composed yet again last night.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see all four defenders rotate and Georgie start. Would like to see Shields get a rest ahead of the League Cup final too

Zack Elbouzedi is obviously out because of u-21 call up, but if what the Waterford website is factual missing John Kavanagh, Dean Walsh, Michael O’Connor and Will Fitzgerald through injury would be a very significant chunk of their first team players . As is the fashion, it is probable an over-statement

Waterford FC -v- Dundalk FC
Monday, September 9th, 2019
Kick Off: 7:45pm
Referee: Paul Tuite

Waterford FC turn attentions to the Extra.ie FAI Cup this Monday night as the Blues welcome reigning champions Dundalk to the RSC for their quarter-final clash.

The Blues go into the game on the back of Friday night’s 3-1 win over Scottish side Heart of Midlothian Colts with goals from Karolis Chvedukas, Alex Phelan and Regix Madika.

Alan Reynolds’ men booked their place in the quarter finals of this year’s FAI Cup late last month after a 2-0 win in Donegal against Glengad United, having beaten Maynooth University Town in the previous round.

The Blues last played Dundalk in July, with the Lilywhites 3-0 winners – and while the visitors have had the upper hand this season, the Blues come into the game on the back of a good spell of results in the league; picking up four points in the last two games.

Managers Views: Speaking to WaterfordFC.ie ahead of Monday’s match, manager Alan Reynolds said:

“It’s nice to win [against Hearts] and get into the next round of the competition. It was a good night all round for us so we’ll hope to continue to build on it going forward.

“There is a buzz around the camp at the minute and I’m delighted for all involved because it has been a difficult season for us. I think that everyone knows that it hasn’t been easy and results like in Turners Cross last Monday is reward for the effort that we are putting in.

“It’s now all about Dundalk. We trained today [Sunday] as a group so we are looking forward to the game. We are nice and focused and the players are positive ahead of it which is great.

“We know that Dundalk are a good side and nobody is giving us a chance. We know how difficult it’s going to be but we’re going to have a good go at it.”

Team News: John Kavanagh, Dean Walsh, Michael O’Connor and Will Fitzgerald are expected to miss the game through injury. Dean O’Halloran is sick but is expected to make the squad. Zack Elbouzedi is on international duty.

Team news

The squad trained this morning with a lot of tired and sore bodies. We will evaluate all who has recovered best. John Mountney is out with a foot injury while Jordan Flores is also out. Sean Murray will be assessed before the match.

Assuming Hoban's going to start in Derry I'd expect Georgie to get his start tonight. It won't be an entirely changed team but you'd expect some rotation to manage the squad.

Is there many travelling?

Judging by Waterford's paltry crowds of late on soccer Republic, will there be much of an improvement on a Monday night cup match?

Was hoping Kelly might equal or even beat Eddie Carroll’s 4 goals in a cup tie record. Delighted for him. Sounds like Waterford tried kicking us out of it late on
