2020-21 UEFA Champions League

Post by seand » Tue Sep 24, 2019 9:08 am

Too early for a 2020 Champions League thread? IS IT FUKK!

Teams qualified so far
Number one ranked team in Europe 2020-21: Dundalk FC (Ireland) 8.500
2: KR (Iceland) 2.500

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020%E2%8 ... ons_League

Ok, so the format is pretty much identical to last season. 34 teams in the first qualifying round, we will be among the 17 seeds (or 32 / 16 if the CL winners qualify via their league). We will be definitely be ranked ahead of the champions of Iceland (KR Reykjavik), Albania, Armenia, Bosnia, Estonia, Faroes, Finland, Georgia, Gibraltar, Latvia (will be Riga again), Lithuania, Malta, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Wales, and the preliminary round winners (from Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Andorra or San Marino). We will almost certainly be ranked ahead of the Luxembourg and Slovakia champions. Apart from that it’s up in the air. In many countries there is only one team that would be ranked ahead of Dundalk (BATE, Astana, Malmo, Qarabag, Malmo, Maribor, Celtic, Legia, Ludogorets)- we want those teams to lose out.
For the second round we have a chance of being seeded. I'd say it's improbable, but possible. We’d need to be ranked in the top 10 of the teams starting in the first or second qualifying round, and we’ll probably need the CL winners to qualify via their own league too (as that would bump the Croatian champions straight into the third qualifying round). I reckon we’ll be ranked around 14th in the second round. It'll be interesting to watch the other summer leagues finish up. BATE might not win in Belarus, 5 points off top with a game in hand. Their trip to Dynamo Brest will be massive. Astana have a lot of work to do in an insanely competitive Kazakh league, Malmo are 50/50 in Sweden, all good news. And the bad news- Molde strong favourites now in Norway, Sheriff will win in Moldova, Qarabag are off to a flyer.

Heard a podcast interview (Off The Ball League of Ireland Podcast) with Mike Treacy after the game where he said we'd underachieved in Europe this year, that the group stages was the goal.

I am not surprised by this being the goal at all, but I'm not sure if it had publicly said up until now from the ownership team that we'd underachieved in Europe this year in their view.

Yep it was interesting, along with the ‘preparation starts now’ part. Sounded like they gave him a free shot to ‘learn’ but pressure is on next summer. Might be ruthless if we don’t at least make a play off round.

Tricky balancing act because it sounds like Europe is priority over League, and doing what we do in our League is no preparation for Europe.

Preparation starts now can only really mean recruitment from abroad to bring us to the next level.

I didn't get any sense of additional pressure obviously being put on VP from what Mike Treacy said, but it's clear that the difference between preparation time starting now in September as opposed to starting last January is significant. If this extra preparation time means recruiting and investing in a higher calibre of player, the pressure may ratchet up allround to get a return on investment.

It's a difficult task and Andy Burton and Vinny Perth will have to work in close harmony to give it a realistic chance of working. It's interesting to hear him say Andy Burton has played a massive role behind the scenes - is that the first public acknowledgement of him by Mike Treacy?

Wait... What.... Was it not confirmed as 100% truth on the Bible of online football forums, Oriel web, that Burton was gone?!?!?

I would imagine we would rank lower than Luxembourg now they have had a number of good years in Europe with results and have a team in Europa league this year.

Ireland ranks below Luxembourg, but Dundalk rank above all Luxembourg teams (unless Dudelange gain at least four coefficient points in the groups and go on to win their league- they have 2 pts in the bag after one game. Slovan need five coefficient points in the group to get ahead of Dundalk)
