4 Team Summer Tournament

Post by Ezeikial » Sat May 16, 2020 10:42 am

It looks likely that this four team tournament is going to get off the ground with Dundalk playing against the other Euro qualifiers

The FAI has confirmed its intention to stage a tournament over the summer to help the four Airtricity League clubs that have qualified for European competition prepare for their qualifying games.

Dundalk, Shamrock Rovers, Derry City and Bohemians will be allowed to return to squad training on June 8th ahead of the event with players set to be tested for Covid-19 from May 26th.

On Friday night, the FAI confirmed that the four European representatives will be used in a pilot scheme, likely to be played at the Aviva Stadium, for a return to football at all levels. The FAI’s Dr Alan Byrne has been appointed to Sport Ireland’s Advisory Group and is advising that Dundalk, Bohemians, Derry and Shamrock Rovers can return to collective training on June 8 with a view to playing their tournament from July 20. They will undergo regular Covid-19 testing from May 26.

The Aviva Stadium is ready to host behind closed doors matches once it receives government approval, according to the stadium director Martin Murphy.

The only info given really was that it would begin on 20th July (a Monday). Assuming it's in the Aviva - which has camera points wired for broadcasting - it would be crazy not to stream the tournament/show it on TV.

Fixture List
Team 1 v Team 2
Team 3 v Team 4
Team 1 v Team 3
Team 2 v Team 4
Team 1 v Team 4
Team 2 v Team 3

To give everyone the same break between games, you're probably looking at 2 matches each day on Monday/Wednesday/Friday or Monday/Thursday/Sunday. That gives everyone an equal break all bar a few hours. They could go for one game a day over 6 days but that is too dangerous for players who won't have been in a team environment for over 4 months. It's not about winning, it's about preparation for Europe. Another option would be Monday/Tuesday followed by Thursday/Friday with a double header on Sunday. It still leaves some teams with more recovery time than others. The big question mark is over Derry City. Do they stay for the week in Dublin? Or maybe the FAI plan to keep everyone in quarantine for a week? If so the clubs will definitely want somewhere to train on their off days.

The first steps on a planned return to League of Ireland starts tomorrow when players from the four European participants will be Covid-19 tested.

Squad members from Dundalk, Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians and Derry City will undergo the independent medical procedure by remaining in their cars in a drive-thru facility set up at each training ground.

The top 4 tournament also now up in the air as talks to resume the league continue. It could be scrapped as part of a way to save money. Euro clubs also asked to give up money

This 4 team tournament looks close to dead
One thing that looks almost certain to fall by the wayside is the proposed July tournament that was to involve Dundalk, Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians and Derry City to help prepare them for Europe.

With no fixtures to look forward to on the horizon, Perth said he had no fear of his players lacking motivation once the novelty of being back in training wears off.

“My understanding is that that tournament is gone but we never had any detail of what that tournament was anyway. Again, we’re devoid of detail,” he said.
