Dundalk v Newtown - Europa Conference League

Post by sherry » Sun Jul 04, 2021 12:53 pm

We’re playing in ‘Europe’ on Thursday night and there has been very little mention of it.

What are people’s thoughts/opinions on the game?
Do we have enough in the tank to successfully navigate this 1st qualifying round?

Dundalk should have enough to get past Newtown. They are Semi pro and in pre season, haven't played in Europe in a few years. The experience Dundalk have built up over the last few years in Europe should make it a routine win over 2 legs .

7th in Wales (last season) v (current) 7th in Ireland !

I would think they would be lower than LOI FD standard, maybe even lower than the Andorran side we played.

We should be targeting to win the tie in the first leg and put it to bed, we shall see what DFC team turns up though.

Glentoran also playing a Welsh team on Thursday the New Saints.
Newtown last played in Europe in 2015,beaten 5-1 by Copenhagen over the 2 legs.

The main Welsh team play in England, Swansea,Cardiff City , Wrexham,Newport. Their own league is a low standard, but Dundalk wouldn't want to be complacent.

The League of Wales, now The Welsh Premier, was only set up in early 90's, it was a UEFA directive that all countries participating in international football must have a national league.

The more established clubs were never going to leave the English league for it, in fact a lot continued to play in non league rather than join.

Might be more for the financial side of it that they continue to play in the lower league of England. The deal the clubs have with Sky. But if they they played in the Welsh league and were getting regular European money it might be some gain

Been calls for Celtic and Rangers to join the English league in the past but they would have to work their way up from League 2. They wouldn't give up dominance of their own league and European money for that

Just noticed that the game is being streamed on LOITV, however if I see it correctly, we will have to pay €10 to see the game. Doesnt seem to be in our season pass.
Will be interesting to see how many people are willing to pay the €10 to watch the game ..... seriously hope fans get behind it to show the club it is something that has to be kept going in future.

Since Saturday venues of 5,000 are allowed hold a crowd of 500 https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/gaelic ... -1.4607736
smaller capacity 100 to 200

I don't see the game being called off unless it got to 8 or 9 testing positive

Their squad is already isolating, pending a 3rd round of tests this week. I would be concerned given that they are a part time squad and can't remain in a bubble. What if the game goes ahead with, say, a 2-0 victory for us and our squad then tests positive and becomes unavailable for the second leg tomorrow week? A default 3-0 loss would put us out. UEFA will have a say, but ultimately the HSE will make the call.

Best way to avoid this issue is to win 5/6-0 against a team we really should be putting this amount of goals past anyways.

Nothing new in this, for regular seasons, ST did not cover cup or euro games, sep ticket required.

I'd imagine it will be well subscribed given only 100-200 will be allowed to attend?

Seems everywhere gets to be a "test event" and have more fans except us.
