There’s been a number of times this season that linesmen have been hit by an object.

There’s been a number of times this season, flares have been thrown on pitches.

Dundalk supporters time would be best served looking at the jokeshop security last Friday
If Drogheda supporters behaved then security would barely have been noticed. Look in the mirror before pointing the finger elsewhere.
Another lad that should get facts right before commenting.

What happened after the match was the following:
- Drogheda supporters kept back after match (as per normal to be fair)
- some Dundalk supporters refused to leave the ground and started making their way down behind the goals (where no stewards or guards were. They were mostly at away gate or outside ground)
- drogheda supporters could see this, pointed this out to stewards at gate
- in response, one steward asked for a fight and had to be dragged back by a guard
- another steward said the delay in letting us out was because Dundalk supporters were trying to make their way up to away exit outside ground (whether true or not - I didn’t believe it tbh- idiotic not letting us out with amount of guards that were outside away end and around our buses, bearing in mind the Dundalk supporters inside the ground were making their way over towards drogheda supporters with practically no security between both sets of supporters)
- Dundalk supporters got as far as the barricade behind the goal, until a charge back from drogheda supporters made them sh!t themselves and leg it.

The above is exactly what happened. Throwing all the security at the away gate and outside the ground, allowing Dundalk supporters after the match to make their way down towards drogheda supporters with no security between them, nearly caused a riot

I was advised before the game that there was trouble expected from the Drogheda fans. Nothing specific in terms of action but the threat level was higher than normal. This appears to be borne out by
  • a quantity of flares well in excess of what would be normal
  • their actions at the end of the game
  • The number of flares thrown on to the pitch
This third point is what seems to brought on the ban. I am totally against flares, but if people are going to use them, the most important thing is safety. The manner and direction in which they were repeatedly thrown on to the pitch - especially when a corner was about to be taken - left me in no doubt that this was deliberate attempt to injure someone. There was a conversation with the FAI observer along the lines of "next one and the game is off".

As regards security, there was a definite increase in stewards present, and it is seldom that the mounties are deployed. I think the problem is that everyone was outside, no-one expected the Drogheda fans to rush the two barriers behind the Carrick goal. Lets be honest, that wasn't spontaneous, otherwise there wouldn't have been enough bodies.

There is always plenty of goading by both sets of fans at these games, both in Drogheda and Dundalk. That's doesn't excuse the violence and property damage perpetrated by the visiting fans during, and after the game. All this does is engender more tit for tat next season. Thankfully the gentleman who almost singlehanded held back the hordes was back at work on Saturday, if slightly battle-scarred.

Only intrusive body searches of ALL away fans might have prevented the flares. To prevent what happened post match you would need to double the security and halve the number of tickets, a course of action that makes it more realistic to not let them in at all.

PS A call was made to the Order of Malta to attend a pregnant woman in the away section who was throwing up in the aftermath of the flares set off when Drogheda took the lead. I sincerely hope that both she and the baby are ok and have suffered no long term effects.

“no-one expected the Drogheda fans to rush the two barriers behind the Carrick goal.”

As soon as Dundalk supporters started making their way behind the goals to taunt the drogheda supporters, it was highly likely to happen.

Let’s put it like this, if Dundalk supporters weren’t allowed to make their way over to the drogheda supporters after the match, nothing would’ve happened after.

Loads of people could see a mile off what was going to happen once Dundalk supporters were allowed make their way behind the goal.

I do agree re flares been thrown on the pitch - I think that’s absolutely idiotic even when not aimed at anyone

If that was the case, a lot of other clubs would also be behind closed doors this season.

Anyway, Dundalk should be fined also for poor stewarding. While I get that drogheda supporters should be kept back for a few minutes afterwards, it was quite obvious that some Dundalk supporters were refusing to leave the ground.

This was pointed out by a number of drogheda supporters to Dundalk stewards at the gate where one steward reacted by asking for a fight (he had to be dragged back by the guards).

Dundalk supporters were allowed make their way down towards drogheda supporters without any issues. Drogheda supporters were also quite easily able to react without any issues and a few slaps had. Could’ve got nasty only for the Dundalk lads bolted.

Very poor stewarding

For the record - obviously nothing should ever be thrown on the pitch. It’s happened a few time with a number of teams supporters this season
Swings and roundabouts. Drogheda fans delay leaving utd park as well.. the one match ban is harsh on the genuine fans who went to support their side Fri night but I suppose it is harsh enough that it might make the club get tougher on those that did it. Am sure they could be easily identified by majority of Drogheda fans. But our stewards are the same as at every other ground. Stop those unlikely to be carrying anything . If they are stopping everyone then how are the pyros getting into the ground in the first place? Secondly throwing them onto pitch trying to burn the pitch is shameful act. And finally they were warned that if they continued that the match would be abandoned so Drogheda can argue and appeal all they want. They were given plenty of chances

It’s a nothing game for us at this stage of season so not many will be too bothered, but it’s the principal of it.

We’ll easily win the appeal.

Hopefully they do look at the stewarding on Friday also though (separate issue I know).

I think our time better served looking at the goals and the maximum points we got in all four matches this season..
But joking aside our stewarding is shocking.. as are the majority in the league.
Dalymount in July myself and my 13 yr old got a bottle of seven up taken off us going into the ground. Not the lid removed, the whole unopened btl confiscated yet when inside ground went to the shop was we were given our drinks with the lids left on . So what was the logic in taking them off us outside the ground?
Equally if they are searching and frisking people entering the ground then how exactly are the pyros getting inside the grounds in the first place?

The most sense spoken on this thread by a Dundalk supporter re supporters on Friday.

Fair play.

I do agree with you re stewarding being poor all over the league. But as an away supporter, last Friday was the worst I’ve seen in a long time. Anyone could see what was going to happen behind that goal 5 minutes beforehand, but a steward getting pulling away by a guard was the iceing on the cake.

The reality is the ban on Drogheda fans attending the match in tallaght is for the match official incident. You have gone off on a tangent. You move the goalposts like a conspiracy theorist when faced with the facts.

Is a new thread supposed to be set up for each incident in relation to Friday?

So to be clear (and please keep up at the back).

1. Throwing objects on to pitch whether aimed at anyone or not, is idiotic. Its happened at a number of our matches this season by opposing supporters. Is it proportion to ban all away supporters? No. The appeal will be won easily.

2. Your stewarding after the final whistle was an absolute shambles and nearly resulted in a riot by keeping drogheda supporters back for too long, while at the same time allowing dundalk supporters stay in ground and ramble over towards drogheda supporters behind the goal with not 1 stewarding or guard between supporters. As I said, it was ponted out by numerous people to stewards what was going to happen when we saw the dundalk lads not leave the ground and then start making their way over towards the drogheda supporters without a bother, and one steward responded asking if we wanted a fight before been dragged back by the guards.

3. Someone mentiined increased security because drogheda were in town? That happens in drogheda every match with dundalk in town, have seen the horses over the last couple of seasons only when dundalk or rovers are in drogheda. But not sure what that has to do with anything.

Hope that clears it all up for you

I brought up the FAI action and you went off on tangents blaming this, that, and the other. So it’s you that should keep up.

To address the issue, point 1. A fair punishment is Drogheda playing their next home match behind doors so that it doesn’t impact another clubs income.

This has aged well. Never make a statement about the future unless you are 100% in control of the outcome.

Nail the colours to the mast and don't be a pussy - if ye get it wrong so be it.

With all things being equal, wed have won the appeal easily. A number of players and officials have had objects thrown at them this season - some hit them, some missed. Some even had matches stopped after linesmen getting struck with something.

Those that said it might be unlucky timing for us and they had enough, and wanted to start with us to help put a stop to it - well see over the next couple of days.

Since we got our ban, if all things are equal, cork and derry supporters will be issued bans. Cork supporter hot mark Doyle with a glass bottles. Derry supporters threw flares on the pitch in united park.

Well wait and see if all things are equal...

Some pigs are more equal than others.

For what it's worth, Rovers incident last season was much much worse. The FAI just make the rules up as they go along.

Equal it is. Part of Turners Cross closed for the home game with Rovers on 23rd.

The FAI just need to find a reason to ban Rovers fans from Inchicore the following Friday for a full set. It's ironic that - given the behaviour of their fans over the years - the first actual bans are for opposition fans in games involving Rovers.
