Conference League

Group stage qualification
€2.94m

Match won in group stage
€500,000

Match drawn in group stage
€166,000

Decent money if a few points can be picked up.

Tbf I think the club made the right call on Connolly, would love if he stayed but as was mentioned, a 300K ish package for a soon to be 31 year old would mean every other lad in the dressing room and future signing would be looking for similar. Owners outright said a competitive budget for this season and that'd blow it and future season budgets out of the water and be back to the madness of Wild Bill and First For Players etc literally robbing us for hundreds of thousands, if not millions.

I do think that the euro performances last season and this season, not just for the champs and the advantage the seeding gives, but across the board will hopefully continue and there's a real chance of 2 or 3 of our euro qualifiers making the 3rd round or playoff round moving forward. This will bring a good bit of revenue in to the club/ league and if we're there top 4 every year it gives us the opportunity to build on a solid financial footing, back to the OG SK era and even the MT P6 era plan of building the club.

Timely reminder, our coefficient will be around 7.5-8.00 next year which will be enough for 2 rounds seeded.

It won't happen, but imagine if Rovers lost a few and same for Derry and we nicked league title, then the coefficient becomes gold dust, would be 70% chance winning one round, then its 1.1m min, win 2 more = group stages conference min !

I'd still be more than happy with 'just' re-qualifying for europe by any method !!!

Probably a bit early in the day for this but looking at recruitment for next season and think we should really be targeting a lot of younger players and players already proven within the league. This is all based on the assumption the majority of the current crop stick around and with a view to strengthening the squad. Dunno what some of these lads contract situation is but just throwing names out there:

Defenders: Shane Blaney (Sligo, 23) Sam Todd (UCD, 24) Luke Byrne (Shels, 29) Evan Weir (Drog, 20) Conor Kane (Shels, 23) Joe Redmond (St Pats, 22)

Mid: Dayle Rooney (Drog, 24) Conor Levingston (Bohs, 24) Jamie Lennon (St Pats, 24) Niall Morahan (Sligo, 22) Ben McCormack (St Pat, 19) Evan Caffery (UCD, 19)

Att: Eric McWoods (Harps, 26) Max Mata (Sligo, 22) Sean Boyd (Shels, 24) Dean Williams (Drog, 22)

I think a lot of the ones that jump off that list are under contract but if we want to compete next season we need to bulk out the squad. We are losing Macari and Bradley who are two first choices, Hauge will also be gone as he is on loan. I'd be disappointed with O'Donnell if we hang on to McMilan and Gartland next season unless Gartland goes into a player coach role. That's five straight away we need to replace and probably need at least five more depending on any other players moving on.

A couple of good players in the first Division. Barry Coffey at Cork City. Phoenix Patterson and Junior Quitirna at Waterford. Though Cork will likely hang onto Coffey, and have a decent budget if promoted . They have been getting average gates of 5000 in the first Division which will help the finance.

I see Michael O'Neill and Stoke City have parted company. It may/may not affect Macaris situation in the long term.

We need 3 new centre-halfs (to replace Connolly, Gartland, and possibly Boyle), a new right back and a starting winger for replacements for Macari and Bradley. Really we are already looking at 3 to 4 new starters for next year if nobody else leaves. O'Kane emerging is a big benefit if we can keep him. Mayo too. I have no idea why he was let go on loan- esp now that we need center halfs. No point in putting Bone or McCourt in there and not giving a chance to Mayo - it couldn't be so much worse.

Overall, its been a great season, but we definitely made mistakes this year. Signing McMillian, Gartland and Mountney have been poor moves. McMilian and Gartland have fallen off, with Garts has been done with injury. I would have signed them too at the time, but in retrospect, other lads would have been better to go for. Maybe they are great for the dressing room, but these squad positions have cost us depth, not so much McMillian , but definitely Garts.

Mountney has been a very poor move. Maybe he is a great lad to have in a dressing room too, but bringing in a lad only for him to be fit to play one game a year is a seriously bad move. He didn't get injured at Dundalk, we didn't owe him anything. Of course I'm very fond of him, and wouldn't hold it against him, the club or O'Donnell in how things worked out, but if being brutally honest, it was a poor decision. If we had more depth at right back, maybe we could have move Macari center half,,, or just have wages to upgrade at center half. It is a move that has cost us this season.

So, personally, I feel we could have really challenged for the league this year and some moves have really hurt us. 1) signing of Mountney. 2) Not signing Connolly (probably too much money, but it still has cost us in challenging for the league) 3) resigning of McMilian and Garts 4) Letting go of Mayo on loan. Easy to say from the sidelines of course, but at least I feel its important to recognize.

As for next season... I would resign everybody as soon as possible, apart from Garts and McMilian. Mountney... depends on his injury, but we cant be so sentimental.

Darragh Markey would be a good replacement for Bradley if he wanted to go full-time. Dean Williams would be a great switch forMartin and Hoban. Thomas Loughran from UCD seems to be a player as well. Ben McCormick seems to have fallen out with Clancy at Pats- and would be a great option. But really, our next season will come down to who will replace our center backs and Macari. And I don't think there are any obvious answers there.

Anyways, only my two cents.

Some decent points Superman but I believe that the town have overachieved considering what we left behind. The new owners have been very responsible in the way they have done their first business. A good finish in the league and potentially a cup win would be some turn around after the chaos of Buffoon Bill and friends and would be beyond my wildest dreams. Watch us go next season under a brilliant young manager and his staff?

As far as the Connolly deal goes, it shows you what a professional set of owners we have for not getting involved in a clowns auction for an expensive asset in League of Ireland terms. Derry have spent a fortune on players and are below us. Don’t get me wrong Connolly was superb for us but you have to look at the bigger picture. Our club will strengthen again next season and will spend on viable targets. The young lads we have will improve under Stevie but after the mismanagement of Peak 6 it has to be baby steps to get back to were we were under Stephen Kenny. Under our current owners at least you will not have to suffer anymore Abibi’s!!!

As for Garts, Boyler and Mountney, they have all been brilliant for us over the years and even if injured will be a big help to the younger players plus they are totally committed to the club.

A bit like yourself just my opinion.

Timi Sobowale just signed for Waterford.... You would think that would have been a player Dundalk should have tried to bring in?

Plays centre half, from Dundalk, young and has a decent record of youth football.

I thought that myself when I saw he signed but had since been informed his family live in Waterford to my knowledge and his brother plays for them.

Hearing O'Donnell has walked. Had heard he was called in on Saturday morning to explain the recent run of form.

Surely not. It's been a grim couple of weeks but we can all see it's a work in progress
