My initial reaction is that the fixtures are all over the place. The whole idea of "rounds" running in sequence appears to have gone out the window. Previous years worked fine, European sides playing each other, and minimal midweek games. If it ain't broke don't fix it. First 2 games against Rovers on Monday nights. Great.

In the light of Rovers draw with Drogheda this afternoon, I had a quick look at our exposure to games being re-scheduled.

Our fixture in Tallaght on Friday August 19th falls between the 1st & 2nd legs of the playoff round of the European competitions. Whatever about the 3rd round, it's highly likely the FAI will give Rovers a free shot at making the group stages, and postpone the fixture. We would be screaming if it was us. That will leave us with 2 back fixtures to clear, the other being Sligo away. If Sligo and Pat's both progress - Rovers are still in UEFA competition for the next 5 weeks regardless of the result on Tuesday - it's going to get very messy. The FAI can't aspire to improve the League ranking while asking teams to play on Sundays inbetween European matches.

With the draw for the next round of the cup already made - and some rearrangements - I thought it's time to mark the run-in to the end of the season. This was partly because of the need to keep in mind the back fixture away to Sligo, but also prompted by Gavin's interview with Skip on Friday night where he mentioned playing Rovers 2 weeks today. This game falls between the playoff legs of what will be probably be the Europa League qualifiers. I've not seen any official confirmation but it seems that Rovers either feel they can cope, or the league have said no to a postponement. If they win the EL tie, the first leg of the playoff will be away in either Azerbaijan or Turkey on the Thursday before our visit, so a very important precedent will be set by the FAI in dealing with the Shelbourne - St Pat's fiasco.

I must have missed it. However I did check our own website before I posted. As of now it still says Friday at 8pm and - to the best of my knowledge - there has been no Tweet.

Update: the Sligo Rovers away fixture has been re-scheduled for Monday 29th August, 72 hours after we travel to Wexford (also confirmed for Friday night). That's 500 miles and over 10 hours on a bus for the players, plus stops. Who dreams up this sh#£? (and Sligo won't have played Friday as they're out of the cup)

One more twist in the tail. The draw for the group stages of whichever competition Rovers are in will allocate them a game for MD 6 on Nov 3rd. PD is due to finish on Nov 4th. All R36 games are supposed to be played on the same night, same ko time.
