Shelbourne v Dundalk | League Round 21 | Fri 24 June 2022 ko 19.45
It's funny how, just like when you are hovering around the bottom of the table, every game becomes a "must win" in order to maintain a challenge that we don't really want. (stabilisation & Europe, nothing else)
Leaving aside our proximity to Rovers - and I prefer being 2 points behind or 5 behind with a GIH - we would probably need to get somewhere in the region of 78 points to finish on top. That means picking up 41 points from the 17 games (8H/9A) left, or 2.4 per fixture. Better to let them stew up front with all the pressure/doubts. The next Rovers match comes at the start of the final round, so the result in Tallaght won't decide the destination of the title, with 24 points still on offer. Circling back to my opening line, we may need to win every game - including the one in Tallaght - to guarantee the title.
We - as supporters - need to be giving every game full throttle, home and away, until the end.
Finally, beating Rovers without springing Wardy and his magic foot from the bench. Who'd have thought?

Stephen back in the dugout tonight. Hopefully a large travelling support tonight and the weather remains dry. Got horrendous soaking the last time we were in Tolka. And hopefully we don't concede a late penalty tonight. Win tonight and bohs get a draw in Tallaght and we are joint top with a game in hand. Oh and a nice touch from the shedside boys asking all Dundalk fans to applaud in the 8th minute for Stephen Bradley's 8 yr old son who is in hospital receiving medical attention at the moment. Wishing the child a full and speedy recovery.

I got a bit carried away like that too. We are 5 points adrift so the best we can be at 9.45 is 2 behind with the Drogheda game in hand. Now if Rovers were to lose to Pats on Monday, that would really put the cat among the pigeons - still 2 behind but another game in hand away to Sligo.niall_hearty2000 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 24, 2022 4:54 pm ....Win tonight and bohs get a draw in Tallaght and we are joint top with a game in hand.
Edit: Latest forecast is rain due to stop around k.o.

Only half way there lads and we are only second. The players have to keep picking up points and with 2 or 3 games to go we can start to get excited if we are still knocking at the door, until then it is support the lads and quietly hope for the best. Drop points in 2 or 3 games, and it could all look very different. Actually like the fact that we are second, all pressure on Rovers who have their own problems to deal with.

Hoban out injured which is a big loss. It was noticeable that he was very late to the celebrations on Friday. Kept very quiet by the club, and rightly so.

Bradley showed bits of quality ,but that was a poor game. Shelbourne are limited but give their all.

Pats were 2 up with 2 mins to go and could only draw, the pricks!!! great result for us.
Draw away from home. Still only 2 defeats. Our rivals preoccupied with Europe. Plenty to be positive about

Shouldn't be settling for a draw away from home when second in the league. Nonetheless it extends the unbeaten run, but the standard in the league is terrible I think.

I thought we were lethargic and flat tonight. Neither keeper had much to do. Thought Sheppard was very composed and commanded his box very well. Benson got a very early booking and then gave away another foul very shortly afterwards so he had to curtail his game thereafter. All that aside he should have scored in the first half. We had another in the first half think it was Bradley that flashed just wide. We lacked a cutting edge or any pace up top. The young number 12 for shels is only 17 and looked a decent baller. Draw was the fair result as neither side created much, although the second half was a much better half of football.

Really dull match, 2 points dropped but still good to get a clean sheet and we're still the form team in the league.
Highlight of the night was the comic relief from Brendan Clarke in the second half.
"Keeper you're sh*te!!"
BC: I know.

Plenty of talk over the past week of whether we're title contenders or not. Let's be honest with ourselves, starting McMillan up top in 2022 doesn't match those claims. Hopefully Hoban not out too long as he does so much more than score goals. Pats result excellent for us as I still think top three would be an amazing season and probably more than most of us expected

Agree entirely L4T. Last night was a reality check after us getting carried away last week. I missed the game due to a prior commitment, but from following it on twitter and reading the reports we had 6 chances but none on target. Shows how much we need Hoban. McMillan has been a great servant, but hasn't done anything this season. Bradley has gone from being sensational, to not scoring in I don't know how many matches. Would have liked to see O Kane being introduced earlier, as with his pace he might open up defences.
Rovers will probably be 10 pts ahead of us after Mon, albeit with 2 more games played that will prob yield 3-4 pts. I think we can forget about overtaking them. We seem to struggle against weaker teams and I am not as confident now that we will improve our goal difference against UCD, especially if Hoban is out. Still to be in 2nd place is something I'd definitely have taken last Feb.

I go along with all you say - especially your remark about Brendan Clark. A really good natured type.

Last night demonstrated how much of our play revolves around Hoban, and how he draws defenders towards him and creates space elsewhere. The players were expecting McMillan to do this, but this was never his game, even when he was in his prime.
We still created at least three good chances and should have scored. The substitutions didn't work, and we become a lesser team when Doyle is not on the pitch. He is becoming a key player for us. Bradley's form is a concern. He is slowing up the play and trying to take on three/four players from a static position. He is trying to do too much, and defenders are on to him after his good start.
Still more positives than negatives, and we are still picking up points.

9th clean sheet guys, this is a team emerging and doing very well too. The goal was always to qualify for europe, league winners was just nonsense talk.
When you think of all conversations pre-season, we are on track and possibly ahead of target.
That said I will be disappointed if we don't maintain second, as we have Derry at home again, 3rd would still be a great season, but second would be the icing on the cake.
I don't rate Pats, Sligo are hot and cold, Bohs are Bohs and Shels too far back, so top 3 is there for us to grab and no mistake.
