Shamrock Rovers v Dundalk | League Round 28 | Sun 21 August 2022 ko 19.00

Post by oldfogey » Sun Aug 14, 2022 1:59 pm

A reminder for anyone who might have missed it that this game is on Sunday at 7pm. Rovers are away to Ferencváros on Thursday and - depending on that result - may have one eye on the second leg in Tallaght on 25th. Andy Boyle will definitely miss this game, with additional games dependant on the referee's report and the Disciplinary Committee decision. The manager may well use the same thought process from Friday in that the replacements for Hoban & Boyle did enough to keep the jersey. Gartland and Mountney's continued absence from the matchday squad gives much cause for concern, particularly in light of Animasahun's departure on loan. Expect smoke and mirrors about Hobans fitness, in order to keep Rovers game plan - and even selection - up in the air. Nevertheless I still feel we have enough in the squad for a draw, possibly even a win on the counter attack. Winning or losing won't define our season, that chapter has already been written in terms of the club's resurrection both on and off the field, and the fact that European football for 2023 is within touching distance.

Off topic but up north to Swifts, permanent too. Was very surprised to see that during the week as defo looked like he had a great chance of breaking through with us.

We need to start getting our sh*t together and providing a pathway, not to say local young fellas should walk into the team but given we're short at CB and Mayo has shown really good potential, it's mental we've let him walk.

Massive broader conversation about the youth setup needed at the club, Stevie Mac gone, T back in and lot of good work going on & results but we need to get our house in order at youth level big time and build a proper underage system & pathway in partnership with the clubs and leagues in the North East and border regions. Like it's not even a monetary investment needed from the owners, it's about getting structures and agreements in place with local clubs and leagues similar to Rovers and what Bohs did with Kevins and are now looking to expand upon.

We've a half decent setup, good facilities and a great catchment area & local clubs and leagues in the North East. With the way the LOI has gone the last few years and will be going moving forward we absolutely need to start properly investing in youth development and partnerships to get kids into our system and progress through the age groups. It'll pay off either for the first team or in a few bob coming in.

Probably another thread in of itself with this!

Ye I'd heard the same. Stevie clearly doesn't fancy him had no CB on the bench vs Harps rather than include him. He done ok towards the end of last season but we haven't the benefit of seeing him in training. Will be a loss to the 19s more than anything else as they push for the league title

Any word on Hoban's injury?

Let's hope for a high-energy and frantic game for Rovers on Thursday. The weather is giving a fresh 36c at kick-off in Budapest.

Word was that he’s out for a couple of weeks, and maybe until the end of the season. Him and Boyle two big losses ahead of Sunday. Though we do seem to be able to up our game for rovers who’ll only be back from Hungary on Friday. Good time to get them but I’d happily take a draw now

I don't think we'll win if we're without Hoban, but we'll give it a go. Even if we did win we're still effectively 4 points behind and I don't think we have the squad to win 8 or 9 of the last 10 to guve ourselves a chance. But its been a great season, and hopefully the foundation for an even better season next year

A poitive reult tonight for Rvrs could change everything. With one eye on the second leg, Sunday could be the time to hit. We really need to go for it on Sunday and with Rvrs having 7 euro matches coming up, surely they will be dropping a fair few points in coming weeks. After Sligo rearranged match we have a run of very winnable matches (Ive said that before). Oh for all the silly point we dropped.

I don't think Rovers will taking the eye of the ball. If they want to get back into the same position next year winning the league is the best route for Group stage football. And with the Conference league, the Champions will always be seeded if its a play off.

Agreed. Chatting to a Rovers fan today who says Sunday is the priority by a stretch. Tonight’s a free hit. They’d nearly prefer to qualify for ECL because they’ve more chance of points and goals which means more money. 36 degrees there this evening they could end up getting hammered

Hopefully Rovers perform well, run themselves into the ground and feel they can win the tie. Any advantage we can get we would take would be welcome.

Would be great to see them get stuffed in return leg though

That rovers bench looks fairly light. Think Finn is suspended for tonight, Burke injured again?
