Dundalk v UCD | League Round 01 | Friday 17 February 2023 ko 19.45

Post by oldfogey »

I'm opening this in plenty of time so people can discuss, refute, agree, or have a bout of handbags over

• starting 11
• formation
• best options from the bench

Any personal abuse will earn the offender a season ticket for Kerry FC. Photographic evidence of attendance at home games will be required.

Hoping Leahy and Bob can stay fit for this one. Boyle needs to step up a gear and cut out the obligatory howler he seems to be offering most games or else he could lose his spot to Annesley. Think Malley can play out wide as well, not sure so went with Martin on the right because I think that's his strongest position.

From what I saw in pre season Malley should definitely be a starter imho. Unfortunately it isn't working for Martin.

In the (temporary) absence of a second winger I think he might include Annesley and play 5 across the back. I also think it's hard to leave Paul Doyle out. You're right about Malley, thought he was the best player on the pitch in Drogheda. Robbie Benson is still short of match practice so he and Martin would be the 2 to miss out.

UCD have been poor in pre season. Lost a lot of quality from beginning of 22. Colm Whelan, Liam Kerrigan, Evan Caffrey, Dylan Duffy, Tommy Lonergan.
Doubt the same level of quality is there.

Waterford would have been more of a force but messed up in the play off. They would bring a following to games also.

What?

UCD are in the division proper and on merit and i for one wont be overlooking their intent on winning and causing an opening day upset at OP.

They stayed up yes so deserve to be there. But are favourites to go down again this season. I don't think they will stay up with the players lost ,but could spring a surprise again.

it's better for the League to have grounds with a good support base like Waterford or Galway ,then 2 men and a dog at UCD. But those teams have to earn their place.

UCD are seen as no threat because they develop players and sell on. For a good professional League it looks better with good crowds at each game

No idea why you are including Martin, I had high hopes for him, but was very disappointed in him when not taking his chance after Hoban was injured. Also has Benson played enough games for match fitness?

SOD played 3-5-2 in one pre season, so not sure he will go with that or stick to 4-3-3 or a similar 4-2-3-1, for 4-3-3 we would need Kelly and he is not fit enough yet I don't think.

Cammy Smith seems have done very well in pre-season, should be a great option off the bench for Hoban, after PH wears down their backline, there is obvious goals in that lad Smith.

We have one other right winger and he's injured. As I've said, I'm not sure if Malley can play on the wing but if he can then I'd put him there.
