Louie called up for international vs Ireland

Should be a good run out against some of the world's best players and then Ireland. Get some miles in him before coming back to Dundalk for the European qualifiers.
Pretty sure this is going to be the final farewell for Scott Wiseman too, who retired from playing last month to move into coaching but is still involved in this squad.

Re: Louie called up for international vs Ireland
I think Louie would be the first League of Ireland player to play against the Republic of Ireland. Hopefully he gets to play both games- 3 pts against France and a narrow defeat in Dublin would do nicely!

Re: Louie called up for international vs Ireland
I think it wouldn't be too bad of an idea for LOI clubs to perhaps send a scout or two to the Aviva for this game. It's proved there's at least a few players in Gibraltar's squad who are capable of playing at this level (Louie obviously, Tjay De Barr is now a regular starter at Wycombe Wanderers in EFL League One so would probably do numbers in Ireland, and Nicholas Pozo recently signed his first senior contract at Cadiz in the Spanish top flight) so maybe there could be some more rough diamonds who'll be dirt cheap. Niels Hartman seems to be very highly rated and played for Loughborough Students while studying there (they have a good record for producing talent including current Wycombe defender Chris Forino and St Pauli forward Dapo Afolayan) but he's I think just finished his course so will be looking for his next club. Personally I quite rate LWB Jayce Olivero (who's 24 but been around the national team for 7 years and captained them) and utility midfielder Kian Ronan (Ipswich Town alum and former U23 captain, can play defence and attack too). Ethan Britto is pretty good too and can play anywhere on the left (started as a LB but is more of a LW in a front 3 for Gibraltar now) but he has been prone to discipline issues in the past.

Re: Louie called up for international vs Ireland
Was a 2nd half sub against France in a 3-0 defeat. Very respectabe result for Gibraltar given that one goal was a controversial pen and another was a horror own goal from one of the older players. The youngsters were the highlights though: Nico Pozo (18 y/o CM, Cadiz CF) earned a lot of praise from France fans and Ayoub El Hmidi (22, FW St Joseph's) very nearly caught France out with an audacious lob from the half way line that just landed on the roof of the net.

Re: Louie called up for international vs Ireland
If he plays v Ireland on Monday, and good chance he will, he may even start, I think this could be entering into first time ever scene.
Calling all anoraks, has there been a LOI player before playing for a LOI club who played against Ireland in a competitive game?
I can't think of any.

Almost certain it would be a first, competitive or not, at full international level. (I assume at least a handful of NI underage internationals played against ROI while at Derry and other clubs)mike wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 12:36 pm If he plays v Ireland on Monday, and good chance he will, he may even start, I think this could be entering into first time ever scene.

I've put it out to multiples Sean, I think he'll be the first ok, if he's selected.

Louie starts vs Ireland. No Lee Casciaro. Tjay De Barr on the bench, presume they plan on bringing him on in the second half with his high intensity play.

Did pretty well imo. World class block to ruin McClean's 100th cap celebrations though and stop a goal.

Thought he played very well indeed.
Dundalk Fc. First Irish club to win points in group stages of a major European Competition.

I thought he did very well, one exceptional block on McClean, probably got caught under the ball for Ferguson's header though. Overall a great performance on a historic night for the club.

Interview with Louie, wants 125 caps. Has 37 at 22 years old, not impossible

Re: Louie called up for international vs Ireland
He did very well, but not just on our DFC hat, thought RTE could have made a lot more of it, the occasion of a LOI not just DFC player.
That block for example, Darragh M said 'a great block by L Annseley' should have said 'by the Dundalk FC man' I think he mentioned the club once during the commentary.
Was thinking if he had been a Rovers player for example, would they have name dropped more, probably.
Anyway thought he played very well, nice calm performance.

Re: Louie called up for international vs Ireland
He done well but the way Ireland played with a slow build up suited the Gibraltar defense. Then they stepped it up a bit with a few crosses in the second half.
I wonder what the future holds for Stephen Kenny after the Ireland job. He done a decent job with the u21s before the Seniors
