Dundalk v Shamrock Rovers | FAI Cup R1 | Sunday 23 July 17.00

Post by oldfogey »

While recovery and injuries will pose problems for O'Donnell, Rovers won't exactly arrive full of confidence either. They are low in self-belief - and perhaps in ability - relative to their exalted status with the Dublin media. As we have seen ourselves, success breeds levels of expectation amongst the fans that can become a millstone for the players

Byrne & Farrugia both missed the midweek game and Bradley may decide to leave them out and focus on the league and a run in Europe. On the down side Pat Hoban shipped some heavy knocks last night. Elliott probably not ready to start, but could prove the difference if we are still in the game with 30 minutes to go. Big call for both managers: flat back four or wing backs?

Big call all right. I think our decision might be made by available personnel. Formation was spot on last time against Rovers who usually to play a similar formation so hopefully we can mimic what we did so well last time. I wouldn't be surprised to see Bradley deploy similar instructions to the 3-0 game in Tallaght last season, let us have plenty of the ball and break with pace. We look very exposed on the left side when teams do this and it was pretty evident again last night there are issues there.

We will take another 2-0 win , similar to victory in Oriel some weeks ago . Rovers going through a bad spell of defeats . Dropped 5 points in Co . Louth to Dundalk & Drogheada & exited in Europe in first round . We have home advantage & Hoban is in super form , scoring for fun . Leahys corners & crosses are lethal with Pat around in the box . CMON THE TOWN . ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

You do realise Rovers haven't exited Europe. They exited the Champions league first Rd but are now in the second round of the conference just like ourselves.

Weak enough line up. The cup has been sacrificed it seems.

Brilliant result with a weakened side and 10 men. Hopefully an easier draw next

What a SENSATIONAL performance!
Where did the 7 minutes added on come from?
I don't begrudge Muller his MOTM award, but I would have given it to Shepperd.

They come in packs of 5 - and I need 6

Cmon The Town , another win against Rovers , what a season , it keeps getting better . Andy Boyle immense at the back . The players were up for it & fought like Tigers . Now for another European adventure in Iceland . Congrats to Stevie , once again . Got his tactics spot on & great substitutions in the second half , Shep was unbeatable . Stevieโ€™s experience is coming to the helm , the players believe in him , they are getting better as a team & they work so hard for each other , indeed a united dressing room . CMON THE TOWN . Seems we only need 10 men to beat Rovers .

Super win!! Doesn't matter what the competition is, beating that lot is always a great feeling.
Backs to the wall for a lot of it but thats to he expected when you're down to ten men for so long.
Apart from Kennys horror miss and the one Leahy cleared off the line, I don't think they had another decent chance. How that team are probably going to win another league is beyond me, they are bang average.
Boyle MOTM for me, he was immense in that back 4. Special mention for Brownlee. For his ten minute cameo, he looks like we might have found a decent player.

Fantastic performance. Thought we were exceptional all night. Won't lie when Doyle stupidly got sent off I thought Rovers would come back to beat us. We stuck at it all night. I thought John Martin was excellent all match and didn't stop running or harrying. It was a real dogged backs to the wall performance from the team. Felt we sat too deep second half but only to be expected being a man down.
Rovers are finished an ageing side, with no real strength in depth coming through. A major overhaul is needed there. With that in mind , can our owners please start contract renewal talks with Sheppard. Nothing was getting past him tonight and Rovers are sure to be sniffing round him.
Brownlie looked more than decent when he was introduced.
Where did they get the seven minutes of injury time from? Not a chance. But what a win.

Wonder did the Rovers fans keep their "Enough is Enough Bradley it's time to go" protest banners ๐Ÿค” ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿค

Really good performance with 10 men. Defended well and stilll a threat on the break. Graham Burke for a player with a few Ireland Cap has the odd good moment, but goes missing a lot.

Great team performance ... once again getting the result which was needed. Always good to go home knowing we beat them ..... even sweeter when we have 10 men.
