We couldn’t afford Hoban but can afford to take another chance on a player that has spent most of the last two seasons injured. He’s a good player but he’s now a year older just over several injuries and back playing on a pitch that is in a shocking state. Head scratching stuff.
Except we could afford Hoban and club wanted to keep him, Agree we shouldn't have resigned Mountney though

That's 100% correct re Hoban, it was clear he was hellbent on getting out after the discussions were held about 2024, and there was no turning back. The budget was there for him to stay mind.

The fact that it has probably freed up budget for another 2 players, possibly 3 is a bonus when that scenario is taking into account, that said I would have preferred to have kept him, but not under circumstances that he would not be 100% committed to the cause.

Just under 25 goals in last two leagues seasons (5 were pens) is not a great return, and remember he was poor in both games v Iceland club, so his form last 2 years did merit constructive review if that what was happened from SOD, but again he was under contract and its the classic case of you would prefer to have him than be up against him.

Hopefully Gullan can step up, its big shoes to fill.

Not a great return is off in my opinion. 14 Goals and 6 assists last year. Injury affected his return in 21/22.

Gullan seems like a very good signing. But can him and Mahon & Horgan replace Hoban Kelly + martins 28 goals next year is the gamble from recruitment. For me we definitely need another goalscorer Unless Eoin Kenny is ready to step up

In fairness Hoban missed a good bit of football over the last 2 years. I think he missed the last 3 months of the season in 22

Mountenay is back 100% fit . At 31 yrs. of age he has plenty of gas left in the tank . Of course has massive experience & for me , could well be the player of the season . Provided he keeps fit & stays in super shape , the boy from Bohola could have a great season . Go John , & good luck in 24 . 👍

The rumour that we couldn't afford Hoban was debunked long ago

Just in terms of Hoban's "not a great return" in the last couple of season.... he was the league's top scorer over a combined 2022-23 despite the injuries. We'd all like to have seen more goals obviously and there's a lack of top class scorers about, but seems a bit harsh to describe the league's most prolific striker in the last couple of years as "not a great return".... where does that leave the rest of them?!

Rory Gaffney is spoken about as one of the top forwards in the League, but his goalscoring is poor. 8 league goals last season. Burke was top scorer for Rovers with 12. Hoban second top scorer overall on 14, when he was missing through injury.

With Duffy and Patching he'll get good service at Derry.

Hoban would start for any team in the league when fit. It's a massive shame the way things worked out but it gives us a chance to rebuild.

The club's social media game has been patchy in pre-season. Not much point teasing the announcement of a keeper nobody's ever heard of or a number 9 who you've already announced.

So we have our striker.
Still hoping we sign a physical number 6, which we were badly missing last year.
Not sure about left back, the Scottish lad isn't coming from a great level, i think Muller will start there unless we sign another left full.

Would be more worried about the lack of a backup keeper. Left back ... players can drop in and cover if needed. Agree with the hard hitting midfielder .... there we need a little bit of steel.
